Connecting CDRW instead of internal CD

Is it possible to disconnect the built in CD and connect another drive e.g. CDRW. The cables seem to have been designed to prevent this?

Yes it is I hooked up a hp CD-Writer to the front IDE connector on one of our DL380's . Seems to work fine but did loose the CD that is built in.
