Custom SSD Drives in Proliant DL380 ?
Hello,
I want to buy new server HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 (642119-421) and install with 6x Crucial M4 SSD 512GB. Please tell me if HP have drive cage for that type 2.5 SSD and if this will work?
thanks

Re: Custom SSD Drives in Proliant DL380 ?
I have the same setup and apart from the drives causing the fans to run a little higher than expected this seems to work ok. See (http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-ML-DL-SL/New-DL380p-System-Temperature-amp-Fan-Speeds/m-p/5781775/highlight/true#M131954)
I have used the drive caddies from the previous generation as you cannot currently get replacement caddies for this machine. They will fit with a little gentle persuasion but will show up as not authentic in the management (although this does not seem to cause any issues). The only problem with this is that the caddies stick out of the machine by about a cm.
The problem i've encountered is that the hp management sets the hard disk temperature to 50oc, this seems to be because the drives do not return a temperature value. This will cause the machine to run some of the fans at about 10% more than it normally would.
I'm going to contact Crucial and see if they can provide a firmware for the drives that returns a low temperature value which I think should sort the issue.

Re: Custom SSD Drives in Proliant DL380 ?
I plan to buy few Intel S3700 100GB SSD Drives and was wondering if anyone tested them on a DL380 G6. Do they fit on HP Drive Caddies ?
We use the internal P410i + SAS Expander Card ( 13 SAS Drives installed (3 x RAID10 +1 spare) and planning to buy 2 SSD's for a raid-1 setup). Even if the SSD's will work , i still can't stop wondering if the controller can handle all the bandwidth.

You also have to confirm from HP whether they will support the non HP SSD. Currently we are facing an issue with our controller card in one of our non production servers. HP says they will fix the hardware after we installing HP branded SSD's. So beware !!

Re: Custom SSD Drives in Proliant DL380 ?
Thank you for the heads-up ! I do not expect HP to support non-branded parts such as SSD's in my servers. I would also never buy non-branded parts if HP wouldn't have the astronomical prices on their ssd offerings.
For example , one Intel DC S3700 100GB costs an average 250 Euro's. If HP was to offer the same disk ( just with a branding sticker on it) I'm sure they would sell it for like maybe 1.000 Euros or maybe even more.
