Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

Hello. As in previous article about an ML 350, is seems that G6 series have a noise problem, when cards are added to the riser. Fans always work at 70% making the server extremely noisy.
HP does not accept this as a problem. They claim that 70% utilization of the fan and 60 degrees celcius at I/O board zone is normal and within the specifications of the machine. So they don't intend to do anything about it.

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

hi,

i can undrestand, that the noise is a problem (if your desk is in the same room), but also, we have lot of this servers, and the noise is for me not a problem, because they are paced in the datacenter.

HP think that ale servers will be paced some in datacenter, in your case it will be better to run some HW check if someting is wrong.

I am not angry on you, don't worry. :-) I appreciate your replies
I read the article. it's quiet as far you don't install cards on the riser, or don't upgrade ilo2 to firmware version 1.75 and above. that's where the problems appears

Read the following, it's exactly the same case, other model. G6 series. HP considers this article irrelevant because it's another model. what can I say?

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

after reading your post, and the weblink,

it seems to that, you need to waint until HP make/releasse a new firmware.

i can really understand that you are disappointed from this situation, we hade 1 year ago problem with the ELS712 big tape library, and we fixed it after 6 months of
firmware upgrade and replacement of some components, at the and HP solved the problem, with our satisfaction.

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

I don't see how they will fix it, when they don't accept it as a problem, but as normal, "within specifications" behavior.
Anyway, i don't intend to wait. i will get rid of the server and replace itwith an IBM. And of course never again HP.

You probably have to upgrade ILO2 Firmware to 1.81 or later.

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

You need to update the ILO 2 firmware.

It seems that “if the iLO 2 receives invalid temperature information, iLO 2 will increase the fan speed to the maximum speed to cool down overheated hard drives”. To resolve the issue, an upgrade of the iLO firmware version is required (installing firmware version 1.81 or later).

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

while searching for the fan noise issues resolved , found this in one of the blogs and also couple of users have reportedly resolved the issue

http://scytulip.wordpress.com/2010/04/10/hp-dl380-g6-extreme-noisy-fan/

In order to slow the crazy fans, you need
1. Power down the G6 server
2. Disconnect the power cord, and then wait for several minutes
3. Reconnect the power cord
4. Power on the server
5. If there’s no warning, enjoy!

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

What iLO2 firmware version you have?

iLO2 controls the fans in G6. If iLO2 stops responding for some reason, the fans will automatically go up to 100%.

We have solved multiple issues that caused iLO2 stop responding in the past 2 years alone. I'd recommend you all to upgrade iLO2 firmware to the latest and greatest.

If you still run into this issue with the latest firmware, I want to know.

Re: Disappointed with new DL380 G6 fan noise

Disconnect the attached storage and use the sata ports instead, that should reduce the noise significantly
