DL-380 Raid5 array won't rebuild

I have a DL360 (G1) running W2K server. The array consists of five 18.2GB 15K drives on the built-in SmartArray 5i controller.

One of the drives failed recently. When I insert another drive the array does not automatically rebuild. Am I correct in assuming that it should? The attached .jpg is a screen shot of the Compaq ACU for Windows screen. This is what I see after inserting the new drive into the slot that the failed drive came out of.

Yes David, SA-5i should rebuild the array automatically. Could you attach ADU report?

From what I see, your replacement drive is bad. It does not report its information to the controller or the data reported is corrupted.
The error in the log is -Error occurred reading RIS copy from SCSI Port 1 Drive ID 0-
I would try another drive or even try replacing the old drive for now and see if it rebuild until you get another

Re: DL-380 Raid5 array won't rebuild

I had three spare drives for this server. Inserting any of them into the drive array resulted in the same report from the ADU.

I tested the drives in a spare server using SmartStart to erase and then build an array. One of the drives is in fact bad but the other two are good. Still the array won't rebuild when I install a good drive.

What's my next step? How do I determine if the cage backplane or connector is bad or if it's a problme with the array controller?

Tnanks.
