DL140 G3 Intel Xeon 5400 Series CPU Support
Hi,
We own several DL140G3s in the company. Now we want to upgrade their processors to Intel Xeon 5400 lineup. These servers contain Intel 5000x chipset which supports Intel 5400 series too. Even in HP website, HP tells that these servers support 5400 series. Below is the link from HP website;
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/en/sm/proliant/dl140g3-qanda.html
We bought a couple of 5400 series. The server boots up and comes to the black bios screen. The server successfully lists the Intel Xeon 5420 series processors and counts the ram. However when it finishes RAM check and proceeds, it suddenly displays "Unsupported processor, plase restart server.... etc".
We have the lates BIOS release (Bios Version O08, 06.03.2009) the latest release (1.18).
Does anyone know of a way that we can use these processors with the DL140G3s?
I guess HP wants to limit the usage via software, cause the hardware supports these processors.
Regards,

Re: DL140 G3 Intel Xeon 5400 Series CPU Support
Hi,
If I follow your way of thinking the 5500 CPU from Intel would be supported also? Since it is also in the 5000 series...
No it isn't... It is complete other technology with other bus speeds... And also the 5400 is...
Following the Quickspecs (found via the great tool HP Product Bulletin, just google it) on http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12509_div/12509_div.HTML you will see that the 5100 and 5300 range of CPU's is supported...
FYI it all has to do with the type of NorthBridge chipset that is onboard... If you want the 5400 you need to go to the G4 and G5 servers...
Kr,
Bart

Re: DL140 G3 Intel Xeon 5400 Series CPU Support
Thanks for your message.
One thing is misunderstood. The HP DL140 G3 mainboard has the Intel 5000x chipset. and thet chipset supports the Intel 5400 series processors. (For the 5000 part, I was referring to the chipset, not meaning all 5000 series CUP support).
The chipset on the mainboard of DL140 G3 (including the north bridge) supports 5400. The CPU boots up the machine too. even it is refferred in the BIOS screen. Before BIOS version O08 (the older bios'es) won't even boot with 5400 series CPUs.
We examined the case a lot, the HP probably limited it via BIOS. but pretty sure that it supports the 5400. The link in my post also referes to that too,
Thanks for the reply, We appreciate it,

Re: DL140 G3 Intel Xeon 5400 Series CPU Support
Thank you, You are right, generally 5000 chipset supports the processor but when it comes to HP, HP has its own design and architecture.
