DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

Hi,

just installed a DL20 gen11.

Now I'm getting ASR reboot for no apparent reasons. First thing I tried was to update all the available firmware via iLO but it has been a struggle.

First it is hard to select newest firmware related to my specific product, then it is hard to apply them in the correct order.

Sometimes I'm getting "The update failed with a component specific error. Retry the update after fixing".

I can not even find the list of all firmware on the machine in the same place and versions are confusing.

Is there a path or a guide to be sure all firmware are the newest and apply them in the correct order?

thanks

Re: DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

Hi @IvanSB ,
The best and non-confusing method of system firmware udpate is Firmware update by SPP.
Please download the SPP and update the firmware.
I hope, my post helped you, if yes, please give 'Kudos' and mark my post as 'Accepted solution.'  Let me know if you are facing the issue still.

Re: DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

Thanks,

there are several problem with SPP.

1) it seems to depend on physical access to the machine or a working OS

2) apparently it doesn't support Debian

3) there seems to be an error in the bash script

It seems I could mount a virtual iso image via iLO and boot from it, but I'm a bit uncomfort with this process expecially since I got a bash error launching the bash script from inside the OS[*]

Once I've the machine updated with the latest SPP is there a way to follow incremental updates?

[*] ./packages/smartupdate: 9: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

I could probably fix it but well... I'd prefer to follow other path first

thanks.

Re: DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

Hi @IvanSB ,

    Here are the answers-

1) it seems to depend on physical access to the machine or a working OS
You need to have the iLO console access and able to mount the firmware ISO image as virtual media.

2) apparently it doesn't support Debian
It may not supporting the firmware update from Dabian OS.
You can mount the firmware ISO to Windows Server OS as a drive, run the batch file, add the server as a node to HP SUM, create baseline and update firmware.

3) there seems to be an error in the bash script
I don't think, you won't get bash issues, in the methods suggested by me.

You can also try upgrading the firmware by mounting the SPP image file as virtual media from UEFI shell or from System Utilities.  Refer this document.
Steps for firmware update -
1) Download the proper SPP.
2) Mount the downloaded SPP ISO image as virtual media or create the bootable USB media.
3) Reboot the system, boot with SPP image, select 'Interactive mode' or use Intelligent provisioning, select 'Firmware update'
4) Follow the further instructions to finish the firmware update.

Re: DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

Hi,

I've been brave enough to boot the SPP from the virtual media via iLO. despite the error I got launching it from inside Debian OS

Everything seemed to run smooth but firmware were not upgraded.

I tried the "auto" mode and the manual mode... but firmware were not upgraded.

Then I tried to launch upgrades from iLO Repository, Install Sets and Installation Queue.
none of these methods succeded and as soon as I enable ASR I get constant reboot.

With ASR disabled the OS seems to runn pretty fine... but then... I'd like to keep the ASR enabled (just in case) and update all the firmware.

Here are some info that may be useful to diagnose the problem:

Re: DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

Hi @IvanSB ,
I believe, it works if you boot the SPP image directly instead of updating via Dabian OS.
Even it won't work, you can log a case in HPE Support.

Rif.: Query: DL20 gen 11 path to upgrade all firmware

I got carried away by other tasks...

It seems that the problem with firmware not getting upgraded was due to mislabeling of one of the driver version (Broadcom nics) so apparently I'm actually on the last firmware but SPP seems to show a newer version.

I didn't investigate further with ASR and just used systemd whatchdog and it works.
