DL360 G4 Array Cable Info

Hi guys,

I'm currently setting up a DL360 G4(SATA model), with (2) 250GB hot swappable hdd's combined with a p600 smart array controller.

I realized today I don't have a SAS-->SATA cable to run from the p600 to the SATA hdd backplane.

I found an HP SATA/SAS 1U Cable Kit (part#398307-B21) but I'm unsure how many SAS-->SATA connectors it provides. If its 1-1 than, I'm assuming I need to order (1) cable kit per SATA hdd.

If someone could provide a picture of this cable kit, I would most appreciate it.

if you have a SATA Model you should read this
P600 is for SAS Models and is for external storage

"HP Smart Array P600/256 BBWC Controller (installed in PCI-X slot)
NOTE: The Smart Array P600 controller offers an external 4X SAS port for additional storage expansion."


on the other hand for SATA models if you need RAID the recommendation is:
"
NOTE: SATA RAID 0, 1 is available with the optional purchase of the HP 8-port SAS HBA (347786-B21) and HP SAS/SATA Cable Kit (398307-B21), NOTE: Required for HP SAS/SATA HBA use with HP ProLiant DL360 G4p SATA models.
"

so you can try that cable as far as I know just one but it wont guarantee you it is going to work

I forgot of course P600 controller is supported and it'll work fine if you were using an SAS model

Karlo, the p600 controller supports SATA, not just SAS. I purchased the p600 since I eventually plan to use the external SAS port to backup the raid array with an external drive.

"3G SAS technology delivers high performance and data bandwidth up to 300 MB\s per physical link and contains full compatibility with 1.5G SATA technology."


Mi6t0, this is the cable listed in the p600 quick specifications. I couldn't find a picture of it or verify how many SAS or SATA connectors it has. / HP Internal SAS/SATA Target Fan Cable (Part#389653-B21)

I assumed the HP SATA/SAS 1U Cable Kit (part#398307-B21) was the correct cable since it appears the two SAS connectors located on the p600 and the HP 8-port SAS HBA (part#347786-B21) are identical.

If anyone can provide more input, please do!!!

Please note the following:

398307-B21 -

"The SAS cable supports four drives without an expander. Two cables are required when more than four drives are installed. SAS Internal Cables are typically supplied with the server. Refer to server documentation for details."

Hmm.. seems like different stores have different pictures for the same cable! Don't think any of them has an accurate picture to depict the cable. Please ignore the link in my previous post.

"SAS Connectors 2 internal (SFF8484) x4 wide port connectors & 1 external (SFF8470) x4 wide port connector"



Is it safe to assume SFF8484 determines port compatibility?

Well I ended up trying this SAS-->SATA cable from Startech. Link below...

When using Smartstart 7.91 I can see the drives and the array about 50% of the time. The other 50% the p600 fails a self test and/or displays a HDD failure LED. The HDD's are fine so at this point either the cable wont work or the p600 is defective.

Does anyone know if HP SAS/SATA internal cables are flippin proprietary?

Someone out there must have more info, please help!!!
