DL380 G2 scsi controller? No RAID

I am attempting to see if I can run a DL380 G2 with no RAID (client request - don't ask). I was informed that if I remove the ROC (RAID on a chip) the result will be a regular SCSI controller and I can run the system with no RAID.

I have removed the Smartarray 5i controller card, but I do not see a way to set the boot controller to a SCSI controller. Did I mis-interpret what the ROC is? Anyone know if what I am attempting is possible?

Thanks,

Re: DL380 G2 scsi controller? No RAID

The smart array controller in this system isn't ROC based. It's an integrated 5i controller and removing it does not remove the RAID abilities. You would have to purchase a controller. You can also configure the HDD as single disc RAID 0's. This would give them functionality of a SCSI controller.

Re: DL380 G2 scsi controller? No RAID

Theo,

Thanks for the quick reply. For some reason, this client doesn't even want RAID 0. Since what you informed me about the 5i controller means we have to add a separate SCSI controller, we will probably try and pursuade them to run their specialized application on RAID 0.

Thanks much.

Re: DL380 G2 scsi controller? No RAID

You don't even have to run them as RAID 0. Create an array with only one drive (with RAID 0), and then create one logical volume (drive) in each array. This will effectively make it just like a JBOD.

So for example, if you have 3 internal drives, use the ACU to create 3 arrays, each with one drive, and then put one logical volume in each array.

Hope this helps,

Note that the raid controller also supports external tape drives, if that's what the customer is looking for.
