dl380 g3 5i controller failed drive, will not "un fail"

While messing with a mirror array (2 drives) in failure scenarios, got into a situation where one of the drives (1:1)  is seen as "failed".  Have replaced this drive with several known good drives.  These appear to spin up and blink a bit, then go dark.

Bios (post) claims it is bad and needs to be replaces.  hpacucli says it is failed, cannot force the array.  SmartStart config and diag show the drive as failed also.
