DL380 G3 Fan Noise

Hi,

I just installed Windows 2003 Enterprise on this G3 with smartstart-7.80. For the life of me I cannot calm these fans. These fans start at the same RPM on boot and stay the same. I never get that calming (ahhhhh) during Windows Startup when the agents kick in and throttle down the fans.

Please help. This is my home machine to test future technology so I can be home with Family. I do not want to sound proof my home quite yet.

Thanks so much in advance!

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

I have installed the 7.8 Support pack a few times now.

Another clue. Fans never rev up high like I have experienced with any other DL380 I have worked with. These fans are at a consistent high noise level and RPMs never change. I just bought this off lease DL380 G3. Everything seems to be working great other then noising fans.

Thanks!

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

I used the 7.8 Firmware and flashed all devices to latest. I will read those threads now.

I am about ready to fall back to 7.70.

Thanks,

This thread does not exist:

For some odd reason I do not see CPQHEALTH as a process?

Reinstalling now.

I have done everything that those articles touch on.

I will keep falling back to previous smartstarts until I am lucky to hit one.

Thanks and I will keep this thread up to date on progress.

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

This time I installed Smartstart 7.7 and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1. I avoided R2 this time thinking some security thing was stopping an agent from running. Well it is still noisy. Attached is a survey of internals.

The part I do not understand is the sound of the fans is consistently the same RPM when OS/Agents Starts and when it is in reboot phase. I am use to a load high RPM during reboot and a calming fan when agents start.

Thanks again in advance!

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

Please someone answer this question for me.

Why does the fan speed stay the same speed all during a reboot and when the OS/PSP agents have started?

Every server I have every dealt with sound like a jet taken off at reboot and then settle down. This server is consistently the exact same noise/fan rpm. Strange!!

By the way I attached a word document on the previous post.

Thanks again!

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

I think the person I bought it from will swap the machine out. I called him and it appears he will stand by me on this purchase.

Thanks! It so nice some like you is around to give me peace of mind on this.

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

Simple test boot the server from the smart start cd.

When the server boots fans will be spinning hard.
Smart start loads up and healt agents get loaded up.

Now do you hear the fans drop in speed?
If yes -
Make sure the bios of the server is the latest version.
And the Cpqhealt agent is running under your OS.

If no
The enviroment could be causing problems
Reseat all the fan module and brackets.

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

I booted from Smartstart.

Fans stayed the same. I have flashed everything to 7.8 Firmware CD.

I reseated all the fans and the CPU voltage regulators.

I looked at processes and I do not see a CPQHEALTH process. I google this and it seems like a Linux daemon.

My event log is clean.

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

I got a ML370 G3 and moved the parts from the DL380 G3. Fans immediately did what they were suppose to. The shutdown to almost no noise! The 641 Raid card was broken so I was not able to bring up the system. Could not believe the ML370 did not have an onboard array. Did these models not come with an onboard array option? I am running (2) 3.2 Xeons and 8GB of RAM.

Please tell me the difference between the ML370 G3 and the DL380 G3. Somethings I noticed that I like on the DL380 was the dual gig nic cards and the onboard 5i array controller. The guy I am buying thru is willing to get me another 641 card. So the question now is the DL380 G3 a better machine then the ML370 ? He is really great working with me on my issue.

I will have another DL380 G3 to swap parts to this weekend to see if the fans idle down correctly. If so, then I must decide on which machine to keep. The ML370 is a tower and truly it is nicer for my home to have a tower but not a real big deal.

Thanks in advance for information!

Re: DL380 G3 Fan Noise

The DL380G3 uses a high speed fan design which is much louder than the previous G2 models. Per customer notice CN0354W these fans are running at the lowest setting when they are started.

You should notice when you first apply power the fans go high for a very quick moment then shift down to the 'normal' speed. Yes they are much louder than the G2's but this is by design.
