DL380 G5 / XP PRO / Elan P111

I installed windows xp pro on a new DL380 G5 machine, but when I looked in the device manager, I had 4 entries in the "other devices" section.

I fixed this by installing support pack 8.0 for Win 2K3 server.

We installed the PCI riser so that we could use the ELAN P111 PCI/PCMCIA adapter. I installed the drivers prior to installing the adapter, as recommended by ELAN. When I bring the computer up with the adapter installed, the DL380 gets stuck in reset, and never gets beyond the white 'PROLIANT' splash.

Any ideas?.... HELP!

Scott

Thanks for the reply.

I'm unable to follow the supplied link for idea 1.

How do I clear NVRAM (idea 2)?

Thanks,

OK -
So I finally got the link to work. It sends me to the download page. I have already installed the most recent support pack (8.00) for Win Server 2003 and it solved several of my original problems. Is there something else in specific I should download to try?

Re: DL380 G5 / XP PRO / Elan P111

The specific model I am using is the 5160. The application notes for the ROMPaq suggest that it fixes a problem that sounds suspiciously like mine (MCE), however, the 5100 series dual core Xeons are specifically exempt from the bug. Should I try the ROMPaq anyway?

hi

sorry I was supposed to link that system ROm for you but found it great

yes go ahead update it

for the Clear NVRAM
see attached file

and follow procedure

1. Power down the server.
2. Remove the server cover.
3. Locate the System Maintenance Switch, position S6, and move the switch to the "On" position.
4. Power the server back on until Power-On Self-Test begins.
5. After POST has started, power-cycle the server off.
6. Move the System Maintenance Switch back to the "Off" position.
7. Replace the server cover and power on the system. The server will boot normally.

Re: DL380 G5 / XP PRO / Elan P111

Upgraded the ROM -> no help...

I'm trying to clear NVRAM. You reference S6, but the switch on the picture you sent me is SW5. Do you mean SW5-6 (position 6)? Also, the individual 8 switches on SW5 are labeled 1-8 on the switch, and 8-1 (reversed) on the silkscreen. Does the silkscreened reference take precedence? Each function for each bit of SW5 are labeled in silkscreen also. None of them sound like 'power' or 'reset' for NVRAM. I guess I need more clues...
Thanks,

Re: DL380 G5 / XP PRO / Elan P111

I printed out some of the included documentation, and concluded that SW5 position 6 was S6 of the maintenance switch. So I cleared NVRAM using the supplied procedure. With the P111 PCI card installed, the DL380 only gets as far as the white 'PROLIANT' splash and freezes, as always. No improvement. Got any more ideas?

Re: DL380 G5 / XP PRO / Elan P111

After further research I have concluded that the older P111 cards are not hot-swappable, whereas the HP PCI bus is hot-swappable. Somehow this difference hangs up the PCI bus on the DL380. There should be a BIOS setting to allow for this, but I don't see one. Is this a possibility? Is there a work-around?
