DL380 G6, disk error

hi all,
I am facing a problem that in event viewer error got recorded as "Disk error event id -11""cannot read to controller \DEVICE\HARDDISKx\DRx".
this comes once everyday.
But there is no such event captured by IML or SMH. As per ACU all HDD and array are showing good.
config - DL380G6
OS- Win 2008R2
RAID5 (500GBx6HDD)
partition - C(100GB), D(1.7TB)

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

Hi Raj,

What is the source of this event?

run the checkdisk /f if source is disk to correct this issue... sometime physical problem with harddisk is not detected by SMART technology integrated with Smart array controller and drive.

Run the offline diagnostic on the harddrive.

thanks,
Aftab

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

You can also run the online diagnostics in HP system management homepage - tried that?

Or with ADU.

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

Go into ACU and check the array health? Cannot read into controller could be a bad controller. Did you apply the latest firmware to the server, it could be a false positive caused with early firmware and Windows 2008. I would do the latest firmware on the controller and drives.

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

Hi All,
Thanks for reply. The source for error is "Disk"
Interesting note is that error is reported only in system event viewer. However ther is no such error captured either in IML or ADU or SMH logs. Can it be OS problem??

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

Hi Raj,

Possibly yes... it could be false error message.

however, to be on the saferside run the windows chkdsk to fix the issue as source of event is disk which is reported by OS.

for more details on this event, check eventid.net
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=11&eventno=616&source=Disk&phase=1

thanks,
Aftab

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

Upgrade the firmware on the controller and drives. It could be a false positive. HP recommends upgrading the firmware first.

Re: DL380 G6, disk error

Hi, I was experiencing the same behavior from my 2 DL380G6 (EVENT ID 11 - source: Disk) since couple of months. Yesterday, I upgraded the Raid Firmware to v3.66 and before rebooting the server (this morning), I shut it down to verify if everything was properly seated under the hood (verifying connections, what resolved your problem). I rebooted and since then, I'm having drive failures (The SAS physical drive located in bay 4 is in a SMART predictive failure state) on both servers except for the bay number which is different. And please note that I didn't open the second server to vrifiy the cables, I just upgraded the Raid FW and rebooted...
Freaking Firmware Updates!!!! What's wrong with this HP?
