dl380 gen 9 problem raid 1
We have an HPE Proliant LD380 gen9 4 LFF, this server contains a RAID 1 with the Bay 1 and Bay 2 with a 3TB WDC RED NAS disk each one.
Controller P440ar with battery
The server was underperforming, so we check it, and found out the disk 1 was degraded predictive failure and the smart battery storage says "failed"
We shutdown the server and insert a 3TB WDC RED NAS disk in the Bay 3 and start it up, the disk show up and apparently is on good state, we re-array, taking out the "predictive failure" disk and inserting the new one in the re-array menu.
After a couple of seconds it says that the Bay 3 disk is failed and started the Transforming.
After the Transforming it still says the disk it's falied.
We bought a new disk 4TB WDC RED NAS, and we tried today. We installed in the 4th Bay. At the start everything was perfect, it recognized the disk. We started the "Heal Array", but at the end it says that the drive is "Failed Disk". After transforming it says "Degraded(Interim recovery)".
What do we do now?

Re: dl380 gen 9 problem raid 1
Hello,
Please ensure that the hard drives installed are HPE options for the array controller to detect them correctly. Before performing any further activity, please have complete backup of the data. Also, when installing higher capacity drives in an existing RAID array, the higher capacity will not be available for the array unless the entire array is recreated with all higher capacity drives.
Regards,
I work at HPE

Re: dl380 gen 9 problem raid 1
Ok, so wich HPE Drives should we use?
If we buy a non HPE Gen 9 drive and we change the caddy to a gen 9 caddy, will it work?

It seems there are multiple factors at play here, including the state of the RAID controller, the disks being used, and the server's current RAID configuration. Let me try to help her.
Firstly replace the Failed RAID Controller Battery[ The P440ar's failed battery can cause instability. Replace it immediately and update the RAID controller firmware.]
Second check and verify the Disk Compatibility.
Replace the predictive failure disk while the server is running. Allow the new disk to be identified and start the rebuild process. Avoid shutting down during the rebuild. Then analyze RAID Configuration and Logs
If rebuilding fails repeatedly, back up the data, delete the RAID array, and recreate it using healthy and compatible disks.

For critical environments (e.g., production or databases), stick with HPE-certified drives to ensure reliability and full compatibility.
HPE SAS Enterprise Drives (10K/15K RPM): Example: HPE 3TB SAS 12G Enterprise 7.2K LFF (e.g., HPE PN: 781516-B21).
HPE SATA Midline Drives (7.2K RPM): Example: HPE 3TB SATA 6G Midline 7.2K LFF (e.g., HPE PN: 875451-B21).
Hope this helps.
