DL380 Gen10 with MR416i setup
Hi all,
We want to upgrade a DL380 Gen10 to perform hardware raid of NVMe. I am seeing the option to install a Broadcom MR416i controller and I need to replace the frontal boxes (cages) but I have some doubts about the max number of cages supported and cables needed.
This is the model of the controller:
HPE MR416i-a Gen10 Plus x16 Lanes 4GB Cache NVMe/SAS 12G Controller - P26279-B21
As i have seen this is the cage supported by this controller and permits a mix of SAS/SATA drives and also NVMe drives on same cage. Is that true?
HPE ProLiant DL300 Gen10 Plus 2U 8SFF x4 Tri-Mode 24G U.3 BC Front Drive Cage Kit - P26931-B21
Checking datasheet I find this information: Up to 2 x 8 hosts - x16 internal tri-mode, is that the max number of supported drives?
I also need to know what is the part number of the cables needed to connect the controller to the cages if It's true that I can install 2 of them and manage up to 16 drives with that controller. Cable routing for DL380 Gen10 doesn't have any information about how to cabling the MR416i controllers.
Thanks in advance,

Re: DL380 Gen10 with MR416i setup
Hi @jtejada ,
Here is the some light on your questions-
a) As i have seen this is the cage supported by this controller and permits a mix of SAS/SATA drives and also NVMe drives on same cage. Is that true?
Yes, HPE ProLiant DL300 Gen10 Plus 2U 8SFF x4 Tri-Mode 24G U.3 BC Front Drive Cage Kit (P26931-B21 )supports all three types of drives i.e., SAS, SATA and NVMe, so it is named as Tri-mode. Please refer this document.
b) Checking datasheet I find this information: Up to 2 x 8 hosts - x16 internal tri-mode, is that the max number of supported drives?
Yes, it support maximum of 16 drives. Please refer this document (Page no.5).
c) what is the part number of the cables needed to connect the controller to the cages if It's true that I can install 2 of them and manage up to 16 drives with that controller.
I am not sure, but i believe, HPE DL38X Gen10 Plus 8NVMe CPU1/2 Cable Kit (P22829-B21) works for you. Refer the Document page no. 34.
But please note that, HPE DL300 G10+ 2U x1/x2 Tri-Mode Cable Kit (P36203-B21) with tri-mode storage controller is not supported. Refer the page no.39.
I believe, my post will help you in resolving your issue. If yes, please give Kudos and mark my post as 'Accepted solutions'

Re: DL380 Gen10 with MR416i setup
First of all thank you for answering.
I think you are wrong because cables P22829-B21 refers to direct connection to motherboard as shown on this link:
Checking other configurations from your link I have found this one that I think is the correct but I am not sure if those cables are the correct for this cage.
P14332-001 - Cable MR416i a BOX 2
P51562-001/P58791-001 - Cable MR416i a BOX 1 / 3
Regards,
