DL380e don't recognize disks

Hello,

I have a DL380e G8 with 12 LFF bay, my controller is the integrated B120i but it only has 1 mini SAS port while the backpanel has 2.

I undestand that B120i only support 6 drives, but I'm planning to use only 4 at the moment so no rush to get a P420 or bigger controller.

My issue is that none of my disks are recognized, i tried with Seagate Barracuda ST2000DL003/ST2000DM001 and Western Digital Red WD30EFRX.

I tried to use AHCI and legacy sata mode but still didn't recognize my disks, what can I check?
Or maybe the backpanel need to have both sas cable connected to work?

Many thanks

Nicola

Re: DL380e don't recognize disks

Hi,

Reseat the backplane cables (SAS cable & backplane power cable), also

Was it working/configured before in RAID mode ?

If yes then enable Raid and check the status,

  1. Restart the server.
  2. Press F9 to enter System Utilities when prompted during Power-On-Self-Test (POST).
  3. Select System Configuration from the System Utilities screen.
  4. Select BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU)
  5. Select System Options.
  6. Select Embedded SATA Configuration.
  7. Select Enable HPE Dynamic Smart Array RAID Support.
  8. Press F10 to save your selection.
  9. Exit the RBSU, System Configuration, and System Utilities menu.

IMPORTANT: The Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller supports UEFI Boot Mode only. It does not support Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.

Re: DL380e don't recognize disks

Hi and thank for your reply.

I reset backplane cables, checked in bios and Smart array is enabled under sata options.

It's a used server I took from ebay, but I presume it was working with an external raid controller before.

I have tried each bay, still can't get a disk recognize, what I am doing wrong?

Re: DL380e don't recognize disks

Hi,

Green led blinks on drives when you power on the server ? this will ensure drives are getting power.

Press F10 during boot to enter into Array Configurtion utility,

check drives are getting discovered, if yes  create array and logical drives.

else , please check these drives on any other machine,

Install any other supported drive in this server,

if still non of the drives are getting discovered and they are detecting on other machine then i doubt you have a bad drive backplane.

Hope this helps!

Re: DL380e don't recognize disks

when i power up the drive does the same light sequence as I put it in, it goes blue-> green -> orange -> red, but it doesn't stay on.

I have checked drives and their good and I can hear it spinning up as i plug-in.

I have ordered a P420 controller, will see if that helps too.

Do you have any suggestion on what more I could try check?

Maybe a firmware update is needed?

Many thanks for your support
