I'm trying out Agentless Management for the first time instead of using Insight Management Agents but the Systems Management Homepage just shows 'No Items' instead of listing all the hardware and software components.
I've installed the Agentless Managemt Service on the server, configured the ILO as per the documentation, configured SNMP traps on the server but still no joy.
I'm getting the appropriate traps sent when I restart the server, etc but I just don't see all the info on the SMH. Why??

Re: DL380e Gen8 + Agentless Management = no items shown in Systems Management Homepage
1) Goto start -> run/search -> Services.smc
2) Scroll down the list and find "SNMP Service" -> Right Click -> Properties -> Security Tab
3) Under "Accepted Community Names" look for a "Public" community name. If it's missing, you need to add it. Click "add". Choose "ReadOnly" and enter community name "public".
4) Click Add and then OK to close the windows.
5) Right click the "SNMP Service" and choose "Restart". This will require it's HP dependencies to restart as well, click ok and let it finish
Log back into the HSM Homepage and you should now see everything.

Re: DL380e Gen8 + Agentless Management = no items shown in Systems Management Homepage
Thanks Jacobpar,
Unfortunately I'd already done that so I'm still no further forward. Also, you mention the HP dependancies; this machine doesn't have any as I'm using Agentless Management. I used to use the HP Management Agents and have always had success with them. I just thought it would be a good idea to start using HP's new recommended monitoring system as I wouldn't need to keep updating the agents every month or two.
So, I'm not having much luck so far - and that's with three brand new Gen8 Proliants. I must be missing something obvious - or maybe Agentless Monitoring simply doesn't work yet.

you can not use agents, without agents simultaneously. Or use one or the other. That will cause conflicts on servers G8

Re: DL380e Gen8 + Agentless Management = no items shown in Systems Management Homepage
Torsten,
OK, that kind of makes sense. I'm just not sure why the SMH gets installed automatically when you run Intelligent Provisioning. It's of little use, so why install it? It's a shame it doesn't work without agents because it's got a lot of useful info in it.
Thanks,
Andy.

Hi Jorge,
Thanks, but I think you must have misread my post. I'm not using both. I'm only using Agentless Management.

Where should SMH get the information from? There are no agents.
With Gen8 Servers the ILO is monitoring all the hardware and provide the information to an upper instance (Insight RS, SIM etc). The agentless management service provides additional information from the OS to the ILO, so ILO can also report about the OS. But this does not work the other way.
So if you use SIM or something related, just stay with agentless monitoring, this prevents a lot of work on the clients OS side.
However, SMH gets installed because the same bundle (more or less) is used on pre-Gen8 servers.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: DL380e Gen8 + Agentless Management = no items shown in Systems Management Homepage
Torsten,
I had hoped that the Agentless Management service would communicate with the iLO and pass that back to HP Sim or SMH. I guess it's a very different way of working now, compared to how it's always been. I'll get used to it. At least my HP SIM can see it and reports any problems. The other big win is not having to update the HP agents every month!
Thanks,
A.

This is it. You now can even run OS versions that have no agents available at all and even monitor the hardware. Great.
IMHO you don't need the SMH in such environment, most information you can get from SIM or directly from ILO.
This will help you too:
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

This is a good technical paper on using AMS with or without the OS agents

Re: DL380e Gen8 + Agentless Management = no items shown in Systems Management Homepage
Jimmy,
I'm in agreement; I don't know why the SMH can't simply poll the iLO for info or at least just make the SMH shortcut redirect you to iLO interface on the G8/G9 Proliants. The bug bear with the current setup is that i'm already logged into my server, I don't want to have to search for the iLO's IP and password just to quickly double check (iLO could be mis-configured, no email alerts) the status of the server.
And before anyone says thats not difficult, try having 100 servers all in different remote sites and always having the info to hand.
Also Torsten's point on the agent using any noticable resourses is poppycock, I first used the SHM on Proliants with 400Mhz CPUs, thus its hard to see how these agents are going to significanty impact your typical quad core running at 2GHz+.
