Dl580 gen8 -1600mhz ram speed

Hi,

I have a DL580 Gen 8 with quad E7-4890v2s and have replaced my 32 * 16GB 2Rx4 PC3L 12800R with 16 * 32GB PC3 4Rx4 14900L-13 with the sole intention of it running at 1600mhz as stated in the product documentation. Unfortunately no matter what I try I can not get it to run above 1333mhz.

Any help would be greatly received as this has been an expensive mistake so far and it actually runs slower than the 32* 16GB 2Rx4 PC3L 12800R 🤦

Please describe in details with how many RAM sticks you are using and if possible ping the part number of those..

Hi,

There are 16 * 32GB PC3 4Rx4 14900L-13-12-C0 sticks of Samsung ram, non HP but that shouldn't matter.

2 * sticks in each of the 8 books populating the a and b slots

May check the below settings:

  1. From the System Utilities screen, select System Configuration > BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) > Power Management > Advanced Power Options > Maximum Memory Bus Frequency and press Enter

If the power profile is set to maximum performance it's set to auto and cannot be changed. If i set the power profile to custom I can set it to 1600mhz but it still runs at 1333mhz.

Re: Dl580 gen8 -1600mhz ram speed

@Masetime

If changing the power profile to custom and setting it to 1600MHz still doesn't result in the desired RAM speed, it's possible that there may be a limitation in the server's architecture or the memory controller. Some server models have restrictions on the maximum supported RAM speed, even if the documentation suggests otherwise.

In such cases, it's best to consult with the  support team. They will have more in-depth knowledge of the specific hardware and any limitations or issues that may be present.

Additionally, it's worth double-checking the memory compatibility with the server. While non-HPE RAM can sometimes work without issues, there may be instances where specific server models have stricter compatibility requirements. Confirming the compatibility of the RAM modules with the DL580 Gen 8 server is important to ensure optimal performance.

These are my opinions so use it at your own risk.

Re: Dl580 gen8 -1600mhz ram speed

Hello,

Memory performance depends on selected processor and whether the system is configured for independent channel mode (performance mode) or lockstep mode (RAS mode).

Please refer to Page 44 of the below document for more information

Re: Dl580 gen8 -1600mhz ram speed

Hi,

As described above I have quad E7-4890v2s which support 1600mhz, I have installed 16 x 32gb PC3-14900L-13 sticks that according to the spec sheet should down clock from their rated 1866mhz to 1600mhz. There is no "independent channel mode" option in the bios for memory, it's running with advanced ecc mode as lockstep mode won't work, I guess it's because it needs more dimms per processor? Currently running 4 dimms per processor totalling 16 dimms all in the a and b slots of the 8 x memory cartridges. Lockstep mode works with my 32 x 16gb PC3L-12800R dimms but obviously not at 1600mhz

Re: Dl580 gen8 -1600mhz ram speed

Hello,

If there are 3 DIMMs installed per channel , then the speed will be 1333mhz.

Maximum supported memory speed may be lower when populating multiple DIMMs per channel on products that support multiple memory channels.

Can you check with 1 DIMM per channel and see if the speed hits 1600mhz. ?

Thanks,

TAM
