DL580 Gen9 no disks detected in bottom trays

Hello everyone

We have an issue with a DL580 Gen9 server where disks are detected in only upper 6-10 disk trays.

Disks are not detected in bottom 1-5 trays. When disk is inserted in the bottom tray, an amber status light comes up on the disk indicating it has been failed, however when reseating the disk in upper bays it is detected normally.

Does this mean the lower disk backplane is bad? No errors shown on server.

Smart storage administrator indicates only BOX2 (upper disk backplane).

Have you checked the iLO for hardware Health?

have you tried checking the physical cables on the server and checked if it is everything connect securely and not loose?

When connecting the drives on the upper block, are they being recognized correctly?

Hello @Mayrink , thank you fro your answer.

iLO Health shows no hardware issues, SPI card, cables were reseated. Disks in upper disk bays are recognised correctly.

When the same disk is put in the bottom tray, it is no longer recognized and marked as faulty.

Re: DL580 Gen9 no disks detected in bottom trays

Does the bottom tray have a different Sata/SAS cable connected to it?

If the disks are known to be good and working, you might want to change your cable from the bottom tray and test it out. Maybe replace the cable from the top to the bottom to test it out if it will work.

If that does works your problem might be with your SAS/SATA cable and would be worthy changing them.

Re: DL580 Gen9 no disks detected in bottom trays

Hello, the bottom tray kind of connects without a cable. There is a cable from the backplane that is routed to the side of the bottom tray and that connects to the SPI board, see the pictures:

As far as we know, the bottom tray is like a whole part that needs to be replaced. You can correct us if we are wrong.

Re: DL580 Gen9 no disks detected in bottom trays

Any luck figuring this out?  I can't even access SATA Options or see any SmartArray check box at boot.  Not sure if your symptoms where the same or not quite.

--- edit ---

Never mind, my disks show up with a green indication, saying they look ok, but I can't even find them or the controller using any disk management settings, nore any SATA settings or RAID listed in system config in the BIOS.  Seems my issue is a bit different.

--- edit 2 ---

Got it to the same point as you, the tabs that latch when you seat all the way were slightly bent, not allowing it to seat all the way (the processor mezzanine).  I am now getting solid amber lights and it recognizes the raid card now, so I'm wondering if it's seating enough to pass power and some signals but not all?
