Clear NVRAM using the S6 Maintenance switch on the system board & Start Afresh with win 2k3 ; with nLITE Customized CD with correct drivers.

OK - I pressed a button that looked likely (SW1 I think) and it rebooted with BIOS settings back to default.
I then tried installing Win Server 2003 and initially had exactly the same problem as with WinXP - the hard disk could not be found. Then I tried with AHCI disabled - and it worked. What's more my WinXP/64 installation sprang back to life as well.
This seems to be the source of all my problems - I wish HP had documented this - it would have saved hours of frustration. Anyway thanks for the help.
