Extend logical volume
System Configuration:
- DL580 PIII 700MHz ; Windows 2000 Server SP4; ACU v2.90.65.0
- Smart Array 5304 256MB, firmware v2.86 Rev A, driver v 5.40.2.0
- 4314R Ultra3 Storage System Single Bus (14 slots)
- 7 x 18.2-GB Wide Ultra3 SCSI 10K rpm Drives
Array A: 2 drives, RAID1, 1 logical drive (Disk 0 - basic), 1 partition (C:), contains OS
Array B: 4 drives + 1 hot spare, RAID5, 1 logical drive (Disk 1 - basic), 1 partition (D:), contains application data.
Target:
Add 3 more drives and expand the partition D:
Step to do:
1. Backup system
2. Upgrade the ACU to the newest version (7.17.1.0)
3. Add 3 disks
4. Using ACU to expand array B and extend the logical drive on array B
5. Using Diskpart utility to extend partition D
Questions:
a. In step 2, do I need to upgrade these other things like:
- Smart Array firmware (Options ROMPaq for Array Controllers)
- SCSI drive firmware (Otions ROMPaq for SCSI Attached drives)
- Smart Controller driver for Windows 2K
- Critical Update for Windows
b.In step 4, can I use ACU from SmartStart CD (Boot from SmartStart)? As I know, it's called offline expanding. Does Windows 2000 support it ?
Use can read this thread for reference http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=78220
Thanks
Hanh

Re: Extend logical volume
Recommended to Have Updates as Firmware for Array Controller and 5x driver.
Firmware on the drive recommended also (you can use Rom Pack or Offline

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/storage/us/index.html
Updates from Windows â you need at least SP3
Step 4
Win 2000 Critical Message designed for 4th Generation and Lower.
With 5th Generation you will be Fine.

Re: Extend logical volume
For step 5: You should also see here for more diskpart info. You may have seen it already, but it was left out of that previous thread. Only the "Shared Disk" article was posted.

Re: Extend logical volume
The 3 new drives are 36GB ones. So I will leave one drive to be hot spare. The other 2 and the old 18GB hot spare will be added to array B.
Because new drives are bigger than old ones, so I waste about 36GB of capacity. But customer doesn't want to restore the data, so I don't have any other choice.
Any ideas?
