Hi,
I have a problem with ML350 gen 11 After I shut down the OS the fan started to make a very loud noise I needed to physically disconnect the power cable so it would stop.
also when I connect a third-party NVME PCIE card the noise starts from the ILO POST stage and does not stop.
I have installed the third-party NVME PCIE card in ML 350 Gen 10 and I don't have the fan noise problem at all.
I updated the ML350 Gen 11 to the latest firmware version but didn't solve the problem.
why there is a difference between Gen 10 to 11?
Thanks,
Itzik

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
Hello,
When third party solutions are used, as they are not designed to interact with iLO the way HPE options are designed, thermal information may not be sufficiently available with iLO, which in turn might attempt to compensate for possible thermal issues and hence the fan noise. If an HPE option is available, install it to isolate if it is the slot or the third party option part. If it were the slot, then further troubleshooting may be required to isolate the issue.

This is simple NVME M2 card to PCIE.
Can I disable the thermal monitoring form the PCIE zone?

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
Good day!
The issue you're experiencing with fan noise on the ML350 Gen 11 server could be due to several factors, and while it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause without more information.
I may offer some insights into potential reasons for this difference between Gen 10 and Gen 11 servers.
>> The third-party NVMe PCIe card you've installed may not be fully compatible with the ML350 Gen 11 hardware or firmware. While it worked fine in the Gen 10 server, the Gen 11 server might have different hardware components or requirements that are not met by the NVMe card, leading to fan speed and noise issues.
>> Even though you mentioned updating the firmware, there could still be compatibility issues or bugs in the firmware or drivers for the Gen 11 server that are causing the fans to behave abnormally. Ensure that you have the latest firmware and drivers specifically designed for the Gen 11 server and the NVMe card.
>> Modern servers, like the ML350 Gen 11, often have multiple temperature sensors throughout the system to monitor and regulate fan speeds. If the third-party NVMe card generates more heat or is not communicating properly with the server's sensors, it could trigger the fans to run at higher speeds, causing increased noise.
>> Check the BIOS or UEFI settings of the Gen 11 server. Some servers allow you to adjust fan speed profiles or thresholds. Review these settings and ensure they are configured appropriately for your hardware and environmental conditions.
>> Reach out to the server and NVMe card manufacturers for support. They may be aware of specific compatibility issues or have firmware updates or settings recommendations that can help resolve the problem.
>> Inspect the physical installation of the NVMe card and any related cabling. Ensure that it is properly seated and that no loose connections or obstructions are interfering with airflow within the server.
>> Consider any environmental factors that may be different between the Gen 10 and Gen 11 server locations, such as ambient temperature or airflow. These factors can impact how the server's cooling system responds.
>>Utilize any diagnostic tools provided by the server manufacturer to monitor system health and fan speeds. These tools may provide more detailed information about what is causing the fan noise issue.
If the issue persists after trying these steps, it's recommended to contact the support team for further assistance.
I hope this give some insights. Let me know..

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
Hello,
We understand that the non-HPE part is working on Gen10 server and not working on Gen 11.
It may / may not work, due to compatibility concerns.
Non-HPE Part may/ may not work on ProLiant Servers because the Server's BIOS, iLO Firmware may not detect a Non-HPE device or may not monitor the card status because Non-HPE Device will not have HPE firmware.

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
The NVME Card works OK without a problem I can Install OS and use it as storage in ESXi.
The only problem is the FAN Noise from temperature-respective and air flaws the system is very good the room where the server is hosted is cold and the temperature values are okay as it was like the NVME card was not connected to the system.
I understand that this is not certified hardware but I want it to work without the noise.
This server costs a lot of money! Gen 11 doesn't understand the situation correctly and runs the fans on high.
why does HPE not give options like other vendors to run uncertified hardware(on client risk) or control the fans in unsupported mode?
Thanks,
Itzik

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
I bought a ML110 Gen11 and am having this issue too. With a Crucial P3 NVMe SSD, I get Fan 3 at 30%. It's not even like the fan baffle covers the NVMe slots, it barely covers NVMe 1 and doesn't cover NVMe 2 at all. iLO doesn't show anything related to the NVMe.
On the ML110 Gen10, I had no issue with fan noise with multiple third-party PCIe cards.
I normally run Rocky Linux, but I also tried booting FreeBSD on the server if it helps, but nope, nothing.
On a ML30 Gen10 Plus, what did work was using a 2.5" SATA SSD instead of a NVMe. It also had the fan noise issue. I don't know if Gen11 is different, but the ML30 did show a N/A in the M.2.

SolutionYou can try this I got this redfish API command form HPE community member that should lower the FAN speed.
curl --request PATCH --url 'https:///redfish/v1/Chassis/1/Thermal/' --user 'Administrator:' --header 'content-type: application/json' --insecure --data '{"Oem": {"Hpe": {"FanPercentAdjust": 50}}}'

The default curl utility in Windows isn't the same as curl on Linux: https://curl.se/windows/microsoft.html
You should use the official curl tool instead: https://curl.se/windows/

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
Hello - we've ran into a similar issue with a ProLiant ML110 Gen11 where the second fan (Fan 3) jumps to 85% when the OS boots with no CPU load at all on the server and the fan does not lower its speed. We don't have any PCIe cards installed and all are original HPE parts.
I've tried everything possible I can think of or find online and still no solution. I've also opened a ticket with HPE regarding this but still no answer.
Even the curl Redfish cmd we tried but it did not lower the fan speed on Fan 3, but it did lower it on the other Fan 1 which is not problematic.
Did you ever get any clarification or solution regarding this issue? The loud noise is not acceptable for a tower server that would be used in an office space.

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
We were able to resolve this issue on our ML110 Gen11 server, by installing the generic Gen11 Agentless Management Service for Microsoft Windows x64. This might also work for the ML350 Gen11.
This is the download link: https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/softwaredetails?collectionId=MTX-ada99fb833d94a8b&tab=Installation+Instructions
On the official ML110 Gen11 page, the driver listed there for Agentless Management is an older version which I installed before but had no effect on the fan speed.
After installing this on our OS (Windows Server 2022), after 30-60 seconds the fans speeds finally go down to under 10% and is quiet as it should be.
But be aware that when you reboot the server and it boots into the OS, the fans will still be loud as before for 2-3 minutes then it will gradually start slowing down and in our case Fan1/Fan3 stabalize at around 6-8% speeds.

Re: FAN Noise ML 350 Gen 11
I have a relevation. Unlike the ML30/DL20 Gen10, the fan noise issue on the ML Gen11 servers isn't a third-pary device issue but instead an engineering issue which is triggered in certain climates.
I recently moved from Seattle to New York and unlike Seattle, my exact ML110 Gen11 is whisper quiet in NY despite it being the same exact server brought from WA. In fact, the noisiest things now is my MikroTik router and switch.
People close to me blamed Seattle's humidity, but HPE's headquarters are in Houston which is known to be humid (worse than Seattle), so it might be HPE Gen11 servers really hate certain climates. It's cool with NY climate and I don't about Texas climate, but it sure hates Washington state climate. If it's humidity, than Latin America or South East Asia would be a nightmare.
It could also be that I'm not presently running Tor relays so the CPU also runs quieter (the temporary housing doesn't have the Gigabit fiber we had), or that Intel's Sapphire Rapids CPUs don't like certain climates, where it's an Intel fault.

This also worked for us.
However, it only works if logged into as admin.
So, one either has to add scripting to start it as admin at boot, or change the service login to the admin account.

Hi Gents,
i have had the same issue. from my Client Windows 11 and CURL curl-8.12.0_1-win64-mingw this command works, finally!
Before fan speed was around 30-36% afterwards 17% quite silent!
