Finding a cooler server

Hi

I have a client with a DL380 G3 ready for upgrade. I usually buy refurbished stuff and G6's are still a bit expensive so was looking to replace it with a DL380 G5.

Apart from being faster, I need something that will hopefully run cooler also. They only have the one location to put there server and it tends to be quite warm.

Can anyone tell me how I can determine if a DL380 G5 with certain specifications will produce more heat than a G3? Is there some HP software to compare these older models?

Thanks

Re: Finding a cooler server

The Quickspecs show maximum Maximum British Thermal Unit Rating (BTU-Hr).

G3 was during the height of Intel's power consumption/heat generation. G5 and later are much more rational, with Intel 5500 processors in the G6 the best choice.

Re: Finding a cooler server

Thanks for the feedback.

I had looked at the Quickspecs but was left a bit confused as I expected G5 and G6s to have lower BTU ratings than a G3 but this didnt seem to be the case. Here is what the Quickspecs say:

G3:
ProLiant DL380 Generation 3 Fully Configured
Up to 2 Processors, 6 Memory Slots, 6 Hard Drives, 3 PCI Slots, and 2 Hot Plug Power Supplies

Fully Loaded System Thermal (BTU- Hr)(240v) - 1330 BTU/Hr

G5:
BTU Rating
3350 BTU/hr (at 100 VAC)
3530 BTU/hr (at 120 VAC)
3990 BTU/hr (at 240 VAC)

G6:
Maximum British Thermal Unit Rating - 1715 BTU/Hr (240v)

So it seems from these specifications that the G5 is by far and away the largest heat creator. The G3 has the lowest BTU rating. This seems the very different to what I expected.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks

Re: Finding a cooler server

Can anyone shed some light on why the quickspecs say a DL380 G5 has a higher BTU rating than a DL380 G3?

I need to upgrade but can't afford the G6. I did expect though that the G5 would would create no more heat than a G3 and hopefully considerably less.

Thanks
