Free tool to wipe old drives
Does anyone have any advice on a free tool to use to wipe drives (SFF) connected to a RAID controller? We used to use a Knoppix Linux boot CD with a tool called "Shredit" that we booted up on an old DL380 G4 server with the internal drives connected to a SCSI controller instead of the built-in RAID controller for the older style drives. But this solution is not working for the new model servers with the newer drive (SFF) types. Plus having to have a seperate SCSI controller sucks - I would rather just be able to use the internal RAID controller.
Also, booting from USB would be preferable.
Any suggestion? Does HP have a free tool (I doubt it, but I thought I would ask).
Thanks
Nelson

Re: Free tool to wipe old drives
Usually these shredding applications wants direct access to the disks, not via a RAID controller. Have you considered that maybe this shredit might work if you load the drivers for the SAS RAID controller?
I believe I've seen other posts on this forum on this topic, tried a search?

Re: Free tool to wipe old drives
Hmmm, the System Erase Utility on the SS CD doesnt exactly do it securely though, it only erases the FAT tables on the disks!
You'll still need to use a third party util if you want a more secure wipe...

Re: Free tool to wipe old drives
Hi,
If you have a G6 or G7 server, there is a SAAP Smart Array Advanced Pack license (similar to ILO advanced license) that provides you with a lot of additional functionality. One of them is a secure erase...
