Gen8 and Gen9 server update issues with HPE SUM Manager

Hi all,

We have a Windows Server with HPE SUM Manager 10.2.0 and loaded some SPPs to update Gen8 to Gen10 Proliant Server.

We are able to update perfectly all Gen10 servers and system detects lot of components to update but not with Gen8 or Gen9 Servers. Seems SUM don't detect these server generations correctly and it only detects the iLO version of the system and not other componentes like System ROM or NICs...

I have seen after commisioning Gen10 systems the uitility detects Server model, System ROM version, CPU and memory but not with Gen8 and Gen9 servers.  Maybe we are doing something wrong or system is not fully working with old generations. Has anyone had the same problem and solved it?

Re: Gen8 and Gen9 server update issues with HPE SUM Manager

Hi There,

Thank you for the response.

Gen8, Gen9 servers have a different SPP than Gen10.
Since Gen8 and Gen9 were running on iLO4, the components of SPP are different from what we have in Gen10 which has advanced iLO5.

You can try to update the Gen10's separately and have Gen9's and Gen8's in another update. Do note that this activity is also dependent on what version of SPP you use. So please check the release notes and Content Reports for SPP.

Warm Regards.

Re: Gen8 and Gen9 server update issues with HPE SUM Manager

Hi,

Yes, I am using specific SPP for each generation but the problem is the SUM is not detecting the components even using specific Gen8 or Gen9 SPP.

Thank you for the response.

Can we try to bundle update Gen8 and Gen9s?

We are trying to check if the issue is iLO generation specific or an issue with SUM.

Re: Gen8 and Gen9 server update issues with HPE SUM Manager

@ngnear

Hi ngnear,

Since some version of SPP are not bundled for Gen8 and Gen9 so I have an specific SPP for Gen8 and other one for Gen9 and I have same issue with all two platforms, tested with some DL360 and DL380 servers always the same results only detects iLO version. The servers that are working perfectly with SUM are Gen10. I still have no oportunity to test Gen10 plus or Gen11 platforms but I suspect is an issue with these old generations.

Re: Gen8 and Gen9 server update issues with HPE SUM Manager

@jtejada

Good day!

You may give a try to below instructions:

>> First, verify that the HPE SUM Manager version you are using (10.2.0) is compatible with Gen8 and Gen9 servers.

>> Before updating, check the current firmware versions of the Gen8 and Gen9 servers manually. You can access this information through the iLO interface or HPE System Management Homepage (SMH) for each server.

>> Make sure that the iLO firmware on the Gen8 and Gen9 servers is up to date.

>> Check for any updates or patches available for HPE SUM Manager. Keeping the SUM Manager up to date might resolve compatibility issues with older server generations.

>> Ensure that you are using the correct Service Pack for Proliant (SPP) that includes the firmware updates for your specific Gen8 and Gen9 servers.

>> If you are still facing detection issues, try resetting the iLO on the Gen8 and Gen9 servers to see if it helps in resolving the problem.

>> If the problem persists, it's best to reach out to HPE support for further assistance.

>> As a last resort, you can consider manually updating the firmware components on the Gen8 and Gen9 servers using individual firmware files downloaded from the HPE support website. This process is more time-consuming but could be an alternative if the HPE SUM Manager still fails to detect the components correctly.

Remember always to take proper precautions while updating firmware on servers, as any interruption or failure during the process can lead to potential issues. Make sure you have a backup and a contingency plan before proceeding with any firmware updates.

Hope it helps! Let me know...
