How to enable 2nd CPU in my Proliant 1600 ?

Hi, I have installed a 2nd 400mhz CPU into my Proliant 1600. The BIOS shows both CPUs are online when the server is powered up. The HAL in device manager (Win2000 Server SP4) still shows "Standard PC" when it should be saying MPS Multiprocessor PC. I have rescanned the hardware but it doesn't change. I have 2 other Proliant 1600's and they are OK, why has this one behaved differently and does anyone know how to fix it please. Thanks!!

When you add additional CPU, You need to change the driver from MPS Uniprocessor PC to MPS Multiprocessor in the device manager.

Check F10 advanced settings for MPS â AUTO

Hello Mike,

I've the same problem with a dual system (2xPII 450 Mhz). Both processors are online but not installed in w2k3. Cannot upgrade hal (it shows only standard pc) and F10 does not provide a solution either. Did you find a fix yet ?

Hi,

I've been there, done that.
You have installed server with one CPU and then added 2nd one. Here's a guide if you say "yes".

Windows devmgmt.msc hardware scanning can't find additional processor.

Go to device manager.

Upgrade "Standard PC" driver.

Uncheck box "Show only compatible hardware".

Select "MPS Multiprocessor".

I'm quite sure that you're in _deep_ trouble if you select "APIC Multiprocessor"...

The information provided by Some One will work fine for Windows 2000, but unfortunately this won't work for Windows 2003. If "Standard PC" is the HAL currently installed, then you won't be able to change it to anything else.

I'd look at the following MS kb article:

The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..
