HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
I'm going to buy a server. This will be a file server. How much hard drives HP recommends that I install in it?

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
Hi,
Since the basic function of a file server is storage, it actually depends on customer's need and server Maximum internal storage capacity.
Refer to the server QuickSpecs here:

Thank You!

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
Hello @umniy_kot
As Suman_1978 mentioned it is the customer’s decision on how many drives will work for them. I am happy to set up a call for you with one of our server experts who can help you determine your storage needs. For the HP ProLiant DL380e Generation 8 (Gen8) series server the standard storage is:
12 LFF drive bays total without Optical Bay
Optional: +2 Rear Drive Bays (LFF or SFF)
25 SFF drive bays total without Optical Bay
Optional: +2 Rear Drive Bays (LFF or SFF)
With the HP D2700 Disk Enclosure (AJ941A) the maximum storage capacity is:
Hot Plug SFF SAS 32.4TB 27 x 1.2TB (with 25SFF drive cage + Rear 2SFFdrive cage)
Hot Plug SFF SATA 27.0TB 27 x 1TB (with 25SFF drive cage + Rear 2SFF drive cage)
Hot Plug LFF SAS 56.0TB 14 x 4TB (with 12LFF drive cage + Rear 2LFFdrive cage)
Hot Plug LFF SATA 56.0TB 14 x 4TB (with 12LFF drive cage + Rear 2LFF drive cage)
Hot Plug SFF SAS SSD 21.6TB 27 x 800GB (with 25SFF drive cage + Rear 2SFF drive cage)
Hot Plug SFF SATA SSD 21.6TB 27 x 800GB (with 25SFF drive cage + Rear 2SFF drive cage)
Hot Plug LFF SATA SSD 11.2TB 14 x 800GB (with 12LFF drive cage + Rear 2LFF drive cage)
According to page 6 of the HP ProLiant DL380e Gen8 QuickSpecs.
For the HP ProLiant DL380p Generation8 (Gen8) series server the standard storage is SFF drive bays total with Optical Bay, 8 LFF drive bays total with Optical Bay, 12LFF drive bays total, or 25SFF drive bays total Optional: +8SFF drive bay (total of 16SFF drive bays)
With the HP D2700 Disk Enclosure (AJ941A) the maximum storage capacity is:
Hot Plug SFF SAS 30.0TB 25 x 1.2TB (with optional SFF drive cage)
Hot Plug SFF SATA 25.0TB 25 x 1TB (with optional SFF drive cage)
Hot Plug LFF SAS 36.0TB 12 x 3TB (with optional LFF drive cage)
Hot Plug LFF SATA 48.0TB 12 x 4TB (with optional LFF drive cage)
Hot Plug SFF SAS SSD 20.0TB 25 x 800GB (with optional SFF drive cage)
Hot Plug LFF SATA SSD 9.6TB 12 x 800GB (with optional LFF drive cage)
According to page 7 of the HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 QucikSpecs
Please do not hesitate to let me know if there is anything further, I can assist you with.

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
Hi,
I understand the above storage configuration. However, if I want to use 2 TB SSDs, how many servers, enclosures and external/internal RAID controllers do I require for lets say 1000 SSD?
HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server can house up to 8 external enclosures and each enclosure has a certain capacity as explained above. So what is the number of 2 TB SSDs that I can insert in these enclosures and servers and how many external HBA controllers do I require per enclosure ( if at all I require external HBA controller or default controller of server will suffice)?

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
IMHO you don't need a single server with 1000 SSD (how about redundancy???, how should a single small server provide so much performance???), you need a storage array
http://www.hp.com/go/storeserv
for example:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=5386547
or even
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=5157544
or maybe
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/disk-storage/product-detail.html?oid=6278027
The Storeserv 10800 can have up to 1,920 drives drives, the XP7 up to 2,304, but not all SSD.
To "feed" so much storage you need a couple of powerful servers like this:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/integrity-servers/product-detail.html?oid=7161269
It's all possible, but
question will probably be: Can you pay this?
;-)
If you really want to know the DL380Gen8 options, read
http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04123238
section named "Maximum Storage Capacity".
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
Hi Torsten,
Thanks for you reply. However, 1000 SSD was just a relative number.
What I meant to ask is on a HP DL380 g8 server (which we already have) with external HBA (P421) and D2700 enclosure (8 numbers), how many 2 TB SSDs can be accommodated?
In the section "Maximum Storage Capacity" that you gave, it is written in terms of either 25 drives of 1.2 TB or 12 drives of 4 TB. What is the maximum number in case of 2 TB drives (12 I guess)?
For D2700, external storage is given as External 240TB (200 x 1.2TB SAS SFF) , which means 200 1.2 TB drives are considered here with 25 drives per enclosure. What is the maximum number of drives per enclosure in case of 2 TB drives ?
Also can a single HBA manage these 25 internal drives and 8 enclosures? Or I have to connect two HBA, one for internal drives and another for 8 enclosures (daisy chain)?

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
You need to compare the quickspecs of controllers and chassis. The number of SSD is limited because of bandwith and performance.
You should think about redundancy anyway, if you need to share the storage, a simple chassis (JBOD) like D2700 cannot be shared between servers.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP DL380 g8 server.number of disks
Hello @faceless
Based on The HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server series quickspecs, the server has been tested with these drives from a max SSD capacity:
HP 1.6TB 12G SAS Value Endurance SFF Enterprise Value SSD
HP 1.6TB 12G SAS Value Endurance LFF Enterprise Value SSD
We do also have 1.6TB SATA SSD’s that were qualified. Depending on your SSD choice, you would need the optional SFF drive cage or the optional LFF drive cage. Since most of these products are not available directly through HP, you can use the local retailer page. Please note that HP has not tested larger than a 25 x 800GB SFF or a 12 x 800GB LFF SDD in this server, therefore HP would not be able to guarantee compatibility. Send me a PM if you would like my help locating these parts.
