HP ProLiant DL320 G6 Servers Auto Power Off Problem?
Hello Dear All,
My name is Shahrukh and I am looking after a SCADA System. We have 10 number of HP ProLiant DL320 G6 Servers running WIndows Server 2008 for the last 8 years. There is one specific Server (I will call it SERVER2 for reference) which shows the following strange behaviour:
- For about last 2 years, one of the specific power supply (i will call it PS-1 for reference) gets turned off with no observable reason. When this problem happens, the SERVER2 remains online on the 2nd power supply, only gives red LED indication on front panel.
- When this auto power off problem of one power supply happens, I unplug the power cord from the supply, let it rest for about 10 minutes and then replug the power cord, PS-1 again turns on and works normally for another no-fixed period of time and then the problem repeats after random time period.
- I replaced this PS-1 with a new healthy power supply but the same issue repeated. I even used that PS-1 in another server and it worked fine with no such power off problem.
- I even changed the power source and power cords of PS-1 but problem f SERVER2 still persists.
- Now more alarming things are happening with SERVER2. From last couple of days, complete server is getting powered off automattically. That power off or power supply failure issue is happeininig simultaneously with both of the power supplies as a result the server gets Offline, shows the red LED indication on front panel and Orange light on its Power button. I changed both power supplies with new one, changed both power cords with new one, changed power source to a new one but same problem. The server is getting power supplies failed every 3-4 hours.
- Remember that when i unplug the power cords and after 5-10 minutes replug the cords, it gets turned on. The server SERVER2 is in an air conidioned, controlled environment server room.
Please help me with this problem. What can be the reason? All other servers in the same cabinet with SERVER2 are working fine with no problem. Only this SERVER2 is showing this behaviour. My observation is only Power Supply Modules get turned off automatically, since power source is from the same UPS for all the servers. All other servers remain normal. I even used those 'problematic power suppllies" with other servers and they worked fine. I even replaced Power Supply modules with new from spares. but same Turned Off issue. Problem seems to be with the SERVER2. Please HELP.
Regards,
Shahrukh

Re: HP ProLiant DL320 G6 Servers Auto Power Off Problem?
Hi Shahrukh,
As per problem description and symptoms report, suspected issue with Power supply backplane, however you can follow below action to isolate the issue.
Action1:
Power DOWN the server, remove power cord and clear the NVRAM using system maintenance switch number 6. Once done, power ON the server and do the below setting in BIOS:
Select the Advanced menu.
Scroll down to IPMI and press the ENTER key.
Scroll down to the System Event Log and press the ENTER key.
At the Clear System Event Log selection, press the ENTER key to toggle between Enable and Disable. Select Enable.
Press the F10 key to save the changes and exit the BIOS Setup. Recycle the server once BIOS setting is done.
Action2:
Please confirm if server configured with a 500W High Efficiency Multi-Output Power Supply (Part Number 506077-001) and power supply white sticker reads Rev A or Rev B. If the power supply labelled with Rev A or Rev B then check by replace power supply using Spares Kit 506247-001.
Action3:
If none of these actions remedy the situation, then suspected issue with Power supply backplane.

Re: HP ProLiant DL320 G6 Servers Auto Power Off Problem?
Dear AmRa!
Thank you very much for your guidance and support. I have checked the Action-1 and snaps of the power supplies are attached herewith for your reference. These supplies are the original genuine one came with the servers in the packing. It seems that problem relates to Power supply backplane. is there any way to rectify backplane fault?
