Hi everybody!
I have an old server that I need to buy some spareparts for, so I took the Product ID and looked it up on http://partsurfer.hp.com/ to see the details on my server. To my supprise it showed me that what I had was a HP PROLIANT DL380 G4 SPECIAL RACK SERVER eventhough the server is bourght as a DL380 G5 server, it says that in the Ilo on the front of the server it self and on the dokumentation that I have.
The problem is that the person that I have spoken with regarding the spareparts says that this is clearly a G4 server??? Anybody that has come across this situation before ?
Thanks upfront for any imput!
Br, Lasse

SolutionIf the information on the server itself clearly says it's a G5, then it's a G5.
Where did you get the Product ID number from? Was it from the BIOS, or from the product tag on the front of the server?
If you got it from the BIOS info (ILO or SMH information for instance, or in the boot setup screens), then you have to understand that it's possible to change the product ID and serial # in the BIOS. They do that so that if you replace a system board with a new one, you can enter the serial #/product # of the chassis itself which is how HP keeps track.
Maybe someone put in a wrong product # at some point.
Easy enough to make extra sure... like what kind of array controller is it using? P400, or the older 6i? Is it using ILO or ILO 2? Are the drives SCSI or SAS, and are they using the G5-G7 version of drive carriers? Popping the cover off the case and taking a look would clarify right away as well, if you're familiar with how different the G4 and G5 are. You could also look at what CPU's are installed because the G4 and G5 are different in their CPU support.
That's all assuming that the clearly marked "DL380 G5", which *should* be on the front of the server itself, is missing. Even the G4/G4p will have that on the front of them.
In summary, the G4 and G5 are very different and it should be pretty easy to tell them apart, either by looking at the unit itself, or figuring out what kind of hardware is in there if you don't have easy physical access to the system.

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G5 or maybe G4 ???
These servers are really different:
DL380G4:
DL380G5:
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP Proliant DL380 G5 or maybe G4 ???
Thanks for your info!
I use Ilo2 and from what I can see I clearly have a G5, this was also my belief but when the hp partsurfer site said something else I became in doubt! :-)
Also the pic provided shows that it's a G5.
