I’ve got an HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 with the 12-bay LFF (3x4) front layout and I'm trying to identify which physical tray corresponds to "Bay 5" as reported by ssacli (physicaldrive 2I:1:5).
I've looked at the documentation, but HPE’s numbering seems… less than intuitive. It doesn't match a simple left-to-right or top-down order. iLO reports flaky errors on "Bay 5", but since the server is currently powered down (cannot check the indicator LEDs), physically matching that to a tray would be a guessing game.
Here’s the layout in HPE docs:Layout as per documentation
Here's the picture of the server:
Front of the server
Exactly which tray is "Bay 5" (my bet is second column, second row, but I'd like to confirm that)

Re: HP Proliant DL380e G8 with P420, 12 LFF - bay numbering
Hi @Shalak
On HPE’s 12‑bay LFF (3 × 4) front layout, the bay numbering runs row‑major:
Row 1 (top): 1 | 4 | 7 | 10
Row 2 (mid): 2 | 5 | 8 | 11
Row 3 (bot): 3 | 6 | 9| 12
So Bay 5 (reported by SSACLI as 1:5, i.e., enclosure 1, slot 5) is located in the middle row, far left.
With the server front facing you, middle-left = that's the drive in the second row, first column.
SSACLI labels this as physicaldrive 1:5 (controller box 1, bay 5), consistent with documented numbering logic

SolutionThank you for the documentation link. It does however claim the exact opposite of what you described. The bay numbering of the 12-bay LFF server is on page 17 of the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 Server User Guide:
Screenshot from HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 Server User Guide
I replaced drive in Bay 5 as in the diagram above and it turned out to be the correct one.
