HP Proliant ML350 Gen9 -RackMount

-We are planning to buy a ML350 Gen 9 server for the IOPS requirement of 5000, so We have estimated 42 x 300GB SAS 10k Hard Drives in RAID 10 to fulfill the requirement.

-Above mentioned Server comes with  'HPE Flexible Smart Array P440ar/2GB ' as storage controller which support RAID10

should I purchase an additional HP 12G SAS Expander Card to fullfill the above requirement or

Deafult Controller does support for all of internal attached 42 Hard Drives ?

Re: HP Proliant ML350 Gen9 -RackMount

The HPE ML350 Gen9 Server supports up to 48 drives in the small form factor models.  We'd love to guide you with the exact configuration.  There is a lot of HPE information to help you answer your question.

One option is contacting one of our HPE pre-sales or Sales reps can review your configuration further.  I'm happy to connect you if you want this option.

Another option is to look at the HPE QuickSpecs to find your answer: https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04375628.  The issue with just looking at the QuickSpecs doesn't help if you don't have the starting point - the exact model you want to begin your configuration.  On page 18 - you'll start to see several SmartBuys that are distinguished by entry, base and performance - the Intel chip set increases as well as other options as you go from entry to performance.

And finally, an option to look for configuration details is popping into a tool called HPE iQuote Universal.  Here's the link: http://split.hpiquote.net/aspx/Signin.aspx?Universal&mfr=hpe    iQuote requires you to create a loggin.  Pricing in this tool is Internet List Price.  You will find a lot of different prices from our distirbution channels.

Let me go get you an example configuration.

Re: HP Proliant ML350 Gen9 -RackMount

Sorry for the delay - here's an example configuration. (see attached file)

776977-S01 - Qty 1

HP Smart Buy ProLiant ML350 Gen9 Intel Xeon E5-2620v3 6-Core (2.40GHz 15MB) 8GB (1 x 8GB) PC4-17000P-R DDR4 2133MHz RDIMM 8 x Hot Plug 2.5in Small Form Factor Smart Carrier Smart Array P440ar/2G Module DVD-ROM 500W 3yr Next Business Day Warranty

There are a lot of configuration rules that are stated here:

MANDATORY : The SAS Expander for the ML350 Gen9 allows up to 3 x 8-drive cages (SFF or LFF) to be connected to a single-channel H240 HBA, P440 Smart Array controller, or to one of the two available channels of the P840 Smart Array Controller. On the SFF server therefore the full 48SFF drive capability (of 6 x 8-drive cages) can be controlled using two SAS Expanders and a single P840 Smart Array controller. All of the cables required for the ML350 Gen9 server are included with this Expander Card. The SAS Expander is NOT compatible with the Onboard SATA controller and neither of the modular AROC controllers (P440ar and H240ar). WARNING: If you wish to support greater than 24 (SFF) drives then an HP ML350 Gen9 2nd Expander Card (811216-B21) is required along with additional cages, plus a x4 RPS Enablement Kit (to provide sufficient power) and a P840 Smart Array controller to manage BOTH SAS Expanders.

MANDATORY : You can add up to 5 additional 8SFF Drive Cage kits to a standard 8SFF model, and thus allow up to 48 drive support. When adding each pair of drive cages then a P840 (dual-channel) controller is an option, however a SAS Expander (769635-B21) is strongly recommended to allow support for each set of three cages (each supporting up to 24 drives per expander). Two SAS Expanders would be necessary to allow support for a full compliment of six drive cages and 48 SFF drives, both expanders of which could be controlled from a single P840 Smart Array controller. There are two different SAS Expanders available - one for the first 24 drives, and the second for up to 48 SFF drives. There are many pre-requisites when adding the 2nd SAS Expander.

MANDATORY : The ML350 Gen9 2nd Expander Card must be used in conjunction with the ML350 Gen9 SAS Expander kit (769635-B21), a 2nd processor kit, ML350 Gen9 x4 RPS enablement kit (802988-B21) and a P840 controller. With this 2nd SAS Expander, and by the addition of 5 x SFF Cages this configuration can support a maximum of 48 drives.
