HPE ML350 Gen10 energy pack error with two Smart Array
Hi everyone,
I have a Proliant ML350 Gen10 perfectly working with P816 and Smart Storage 96W battery.
Recently I added a third drive cage and a Smart Array P408i. When the P408i battery backup connector is connected, a strange issue happens.
In the early system initialization phase of POST, i have an error with the Smart Storage Energy Pack Backup.
All the firmwares are up-to-date. If I remove the power cable from the P408i, the error disappear.
There is no error in the IML or even in SSA.
Does someone have an idea?

Re: HPE ML350 Gen10 energy pack error with two Smart Array
Greetings!
The Smart Storage battery is connected to the system board, allowing the P816-a to draw power directly from it.
Since the P408i is PCIe-based, please ensure that the power cable is properly connected between the card and the riser board.

Re: HPE ML350 Gen10 energy pack error with two Smart Array
Hi,
Thank you much for your reply.
When I connect the P408i backup power cable, it shows the error we can see in the screen capture. It shows it twice.
As you can see, at the moment of the capture, it says on the 2nd line "HPE Smart Storage Energy Pack backup - Start" and then "HPE Smart Storage Energy Pack backup - Error". Then it does it again as you can see on the last line of the capture. It is not shown, but the second attempt will end up with "HPE Smart Storage Energy Pack backup - Error" message again, before continuing the boot process.
After that, no more error is shown in ILO, IML or SSA, and the controler cache is enabled.
If I disconnect the backup power cable from the P408i, no error is shown at boot at all (but of course i can't enable cache).

Re: HPE ML350 Gen10 energy pack error with two Smart Array
Greetings!
Did you have a chance to test with a different cable and another port on the riser?
I recommend collecting the AHS logs and logging a support ticket to review the configuration and identify any underlying issues.
