Int 20/40 DAT in storage expander II

Int 20/40 DAT in storage expander II

Trying to use an internal ( Compaq ) 20/40 DAT drive in a storage expander II, i can get the bios to see the drive but diags etc. will not. Does the external box need to be terminated? Using SmartStart the drive is recognised when looking in 'drive array configuration utility'.
