LasrJet 1015 and parallel ports?

Hi I've just recently bought a LaserJet 1015 with both a parallel and USB port. My printer works with no problems on my USB port with my Windows XP laptop but seems to only very rarely work with my Win 98 PC with the parallel port, with the same message (there was an error printing to LPT1...)As a complete novice I have tried repeatedly to uninstall and reinstall the software with little success. As for the three lights the middle light is on while the top and lower lights are much dimmer. Can anyone help? Thanks.
