ML110 G3 File Transfer Speed - Slow!!

I have a ML110 G3 with SBS 2003 set-up with raid1. I've noticed in doing large file transfers (10GB+) that it's about 4 times faster doing this tranfer to a USB external drive than to another directory on the internal drive. Is this normal??
