ML110 G5 Faild RAID 1

I have a small customer with a ProLiant ML110 G5. There are two RAID 1 arrays: Array 0 (OS) and Array 1 (Data). One of the drives on the OS array has failed. I removed the old drive, attached a new drive (same size) and the OS array is not rebuilding. Currently, Array #0 (OS) says "Legacy". Array #1 (Data) says optimal.

When I go into the embedded SATA RAID BIOS (F8 at boot) => Array Configuration, Manage Arrays, Array #0 (OS) doesn't even show up. If I go back and go to "Create Array", it only allows me to select the new drive. The other OS drive is greyed out. Lastly, if I go to Array Configuration => Configure Drives, select the old OS drive, it warns me I may lose data. I can still boot to this drive just fine, but need to recreate the array by adding the new drive.

My question is how do I get this new drive to be a member of array #0 (OS) without mucking up the single good drive? In other words, how can I rebuild the RAID 1 array from the old disk and the replacement disk?

Try running ACU from within the OS or from the SmartStart CD.

Take a look at the ACU guide in the "Working with mirrored arrays" section, page 44

Before doing any further disk work, take a good backup (or two) of the OS and data.

Unfortunately, I am using the HP embedded SATA controller on the motherboard and ACU does not work with the embedded controller.

Any other ideas? I really want to turn this back to a hardware RAID and not have to RAID the drives through Server 2003.

What OS is running on this server?

If you have the CLI installed in the OS try using it and get the status of the drives using the CLI. May be the "rescan" command of the CLI will help.

HP does not provide a lot of support or flexibility on these controllers and does not even give them a name. (For a while they were using the B110i name for the embedded controllers I don't know if they are the same).
May they do it on purpose so that you always upgrade to the SA controllers or or maybe it is to be expected from these entry level controllers.

You probably have seen these, they don't necessarily apply to you, just for reference on the limited functionality of the embedded raid controllers.
