ML115 G5 with nVidia RAID 1 (160GB SATA Drives)

I installed SBS 2003 to a nVidia RAID 1 array on this ML115 G5 by setting up the array then installing Windows using the F6 key to install the two nVidia RAID drivers.

After the install was totally complete I was copying data from an external hard disk and installing Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 at the same time. Everything got so terrible slow that I eventually had to hold in the button and force a shutdown. The hard disk was just churning away but nothing was happening.

My RAID array doesn't show that anything is degraded but the machine continued to run so slow after the shutdown that I decided to synchronize the array. There were no warnings when I chose to do that about how long it would take, or the fact that you can't cancel a synchronize.

Why does the RAID array degrade but still report back as healthy? By all appearances that's what happened.
