ML150 Gen9 - Intelligent Provisioning not finding ISO

HI all,

I recently purchased a second hand ML150 Gen9. I have 4 drives installed with 2 arrays (raid 1 per 2 drives). I'm trying to use the "Intelligent Provissioning" tool but dispite trynig various Windows Server ISO's it does not recognise or display an ISO to select.

I have tried Windows Server 2025, 2022 and 2019.

I have had success creatring a bootable USB but when I try this method, Windows installation doesn't recognise either of the drive arrays.

Any advice on installing through the provissioning tool - or the driver I need to add to my bootable USB for Windows install to recognise the disk arrays?

Many thanks,

John

Re: ML150 Gen9 - Intelligent Provisioning not finding ISO

John, the "Intelligent Provisioning" tool on your HPE ML150 Gen9 may not be working with newer Windows Server ISOs like 2025 because it needs a firmware update to recognize them. The tool's embedded software is often outdated on older servers.

To install Windows, you'll need the HPE Smart Array P440 driver on your bootable USB. The Windows installation doesn't see your RAID arrays because it lacks the necessary driver for the Smart Array controller. Download the correct driver from HPE's website and place it on your USB. During the Windows setup, when it asks where to install the OS, you'll need to click "Load driver" and point it to the driver on your USB. This will allow Windows to recognize your drive arrays and proceed with the installation.

Re: ML150 Gen9 - Intelligent Provisioning not finding ISO

Hi @J_Clark ,

If Intelligent Provisioning does not recognize your Windows Server ISO, check the following:

  • Update Intelligent Provisioning: Older versions of Intelligent Provisioning may not support newer Windows Server versions like 2019, 2022, or 2025. Refer this link to download latest version.
  • Ensure your ISO file is valid and not corrupted.
  • Confirm that the RAID arrays are properly configured in the HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) during Intelligent Provisioning. If the RAID configuration is incomplete or inconsistent, Intelligent Provisioning might fail to detect storage arrays. Please find the link to download SSA
  • If you're installing via bootable USB and Windows does not detect your RAID arrays, it’s likely missing the appropriate storage controller drivers for the HPE server.
  • The ML150 Gen9 typically uses an HPE Smart Array RAID controller, such as the HPE Smart Array B140i (software RAID) or a hardware RAID controller like the HPE Smart Array P440. Please find the link here to download the driver.
  • Copy the RAID driver files to your bootable USB. During the Windows Server installation, when prompted to select the disk, click "Load Driver". After loading the drivers, the RAID arrays should appear.
