Offline Firmware and Gen 8+ Systems Running Windows
Guys, just wondering if offline firmware is required anymore on Windows systems running on Gen8 or higher hardware? In the past, we generally would have been able to run some component firmwares online but other things like older drives would have to be done offline by booting to media. has this been removed in Gen8 and higher servers i.e. will all firmware components have the ability to be flashed online?

Re: Offline Firmware and Gen 8+ Systems Running Windows
Almost all components can be updated online, some require a reboot (e.g. BIOS).
Only a few must be updated offline, like disk backplanes.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Hi Torsten, thanks for the reply. When you say disk backplanes, what do you mean?

The board where the disks plug in.
Most of them have firmware too (because of integrated SAS expanders).
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
