P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
I have a P840ar controller connected to 10x physical drives.
8x 4TB and 2x 300GB
I need to create a hardware mirror for the 2x 300's for the OS, and have the 8x 4TB in HBA mode so they directly addessable from the OS.
I understood from the issues i experienced with a 440ar, you can run the 840 in mixed mode. I previously had a P440ar in HBA mode and had to buy another H240 to run the RAID mirror for OS. That was running storage spaces direct.
How can i enable dual HBA \ RAID mode on the P840ar.
I do not want to create 8x little raid 0's.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
The quickspecs and the user guide do not mention "mixed" mode. It is either "RAID" or "HBA". Have you checked within the SSA utility if mixed mode is possible?
What are you trying to do with 8x4TB disk drives on the OS side? The 840 is quite powerfull as a RAID controller with 16 independent disk ports.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
I'm not aware of such mixed mode.
the quickspec says
RAID or HBA mode
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
Thanks. I need HBA mode so the disks are pass through to the OS for use under Storage Spaces. If i set the controller to HBA mode, that also means my OS exposed disks are in HBA mode, i want those as a hardware mirror controlled by the controller.
I was told by a HP rep that 440ar does not do mixed mode - as we found out on previous project.
So we purchased a 840ar for this project only to find no "mixed" mode in the SSU either.
Which HP card does mixed mode?
All i want is HBA for data disks and RAID 1 (controller) for OS.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
Today I worked with a Smart Array P830 controller and it really looks like you can mix HBA and RAID mode, one per port.
This controller has 2 internal ports, but there were only 2 disks at one port, so the configuration option was not available, but the page IMHO suggests about a mixed mode.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
Hi,
i am really interested in this topic because i have exactly same problem with p440ar for storage spaces direct.
Everything in HPSSA means that there is a mixed mode, but the option are not in the forms.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
The Smart Array controllers for Gen10 ProLiant are the first HPE controllers to support mixed mode

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
Nice to know it, sure it's the answer for S2D !
But what about "old" gen controllers? is it in the roadmap? everything seems to be ready in HP SSA! :(
any CLI option to enable/activate ?

I wouldn't expect this feature to be added to older genreation controllers. You should open a support case

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
I wanted to know how you got this to work. I have an ProLiant DL360 Gen 10 wit the P408i-a controller I have 6 drives all 300GB. I am trying to do a RAID 1 (mirror) the OS and then RAID 1+0 for the other 4 drives, howver when ever I go to create the array I get this message "These drives will become unavailable to the OS " I have never seen this before, and one thing I notice different is I see the port settings set to 'MIXED MODE", but don't know of a way to change this. Can you provide me some assistance so I can get this server settup? Thank you.

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
If you create a RAID now, the RAID is presented, the physical drives no longer.
this is mixed mode ...
Hope this helps!

Re: P840ar Controller in MIXED mode - RAID & HBA
How does one disable mixed mode on GEN10? We want to prevent sending drives to remote sites and it being made available in Windows without someone realizing that the RAID was not setup on it yet and using it prematurely.
Thanks
