Poor performance of ML370 G3

Just started using a ML370 G3 Proliant server. It has one Xeon processor (2.88 GHz) , 1 GB of memory and 5 - 72GB ULTRA3 Disk drives in a RAID5 configuration using a 53xx controller. It is replacing a ML370 G2 system with a P3 processor (1.33 GHz), 512 MB of memory, and 3 - 18 GB ULTRA3 disk drive in a RAID 5 configuration with a 431 Smart Array. We run a home grown VB application that reads / writes files to disk. The performance of the G3 system is worse than the G2 processor. The application take 9 minutes to process a file on the G2 and 12 minutes to process the same file on the G3. All indications are that the G3 should be faster, but it is not proving true. Any ideas?

Re: Poor performance of ML370 G3

I took out my 5312 controller and runs
RAID-5 in software (on Linux).

This gives a factor 2-3 improvement in read
and write speed compared to the Smart Array
controller.

Can you run RAID-5 in software in Windows?
(I assume you run Windows, if you run
VB applications).

Re: Poor performance of ML370 G3

Sorry, should have included software stuff. We are running Windows 2K server with Service Pack 2 on the G3 and Windows 2K with Service Pack 3 on the G2 system.

Re: Poor performance of ML370 G3

i think you should first check the 53xx RAID controller. Use the latest Array Control Utility and check status of batteries, disks, controller settings.
