Power failure during a RAID 5 expansion

Hello,

Can someone please advise me on this issue? I intend to expand a RAID 5 array from 4 disks to 6 disks online. My issue is that the power supply in the region is not reliable, and so cannot be guaranteed for the duration of the expansion. My question is simply what happens if there is a power failure during an array expansion? There is no option for backing up to temporary storage.  There is UPS, but may not be enough to power the server for any considerable amount of power outage.

Thanks,

Once again, thanks for a very unhelpful answer.

Is anybody out there with REAL LIFE PRACTICAL answer to the question, please?

I apologise in advance if my response is a little sarcastic.

Thanks

Re: Query: Power failure during a RAID 5 expansion

Hello,

Generally there should be no problem when and the array is being expanded. In case of a failure, it would be difficult to say if the data on the existing drives would still remain intact or becuase there are new disks installed, and the parity data is redistributed across the disks would there be loss of entire data is a question.

Hence, as a precaution, it is always recommended to backup data and then proceed with expansion.

Re: Query: Power failure during a RAID 5 expansion

Hi,

To do such action you need a battery backupped write cache module attached.

in case of a power failure , the battery has enough power to write the data in cach from dram to flash
