Problem with mouse / keyboard

I have Compaq Proliant 3000 server - To setup the server I have used Smart Start version 5.5. I choosed to install Windows 2000 server and it is working fine.

But when Windows 2000 server is booting up for the first time, Windows have to check the system setup (seach for devices etc) - But I am unable to click "next" because my keyboard and mouse is not working.

It was working fine under the Smart Start installation

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
Please clear the NVRAM and see if that helps. Also if you have any third party hardware in the system please remove it. This is just to eliminate the obvious. Here is the link for the latest BIOS of your server:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13949.html

I have attached a document to clear the NVRAM. Please do this after updating the BIOS only. May be you would not have to go through it.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
I am glad everything is working alright for you. You don't need to clear NVRAM at this point. But remember if you have any hardware problems then you can resolve those by the process as explained in the document I have attached in my previous posting. If you would like the documentation for your server then please email me at sunil.jerath@hp.com

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

I have installed Windows 2000 server succesfully - But under the smart start setup I created 2 arrays.

I have 7 scsi Harddisk - The first 2 I created was Raid 0 and the last 5 was Raid 5.

So I gues There should have been made 2 local harddisk ...

But I can only see one harddisk .. and the size is not only 2gb - Every Harddisk have a capacity of 4.3 gb

What can I do ?

Hello Kim,
Yes definitely you should upgrade the firmware and which can be downloaded from the following link:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/14981.html

This is an online version. Just make sure you download it locally at the server and then install.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

I have tryed to install it online. But when I start to run the .exe file there is a problem.

Under "additional info" is standing :
"an array controller ROM is out of date" - when I try to push the install error I get an error message, where are standing :

"please flash offline"

hmm ??

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
Not a problem here is the offline version:

You need to make first diskette only even though it asks you to make 4 floppies. Please let me know.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

I have updated the firmware - but as I rebooted the server, it came up with an error that SCSI 2 had an error and should be replaced

I can still come into Windows, but there is still only 1 drive ...

I will try to start from Zero again, with a Windows installation .. and see if it works

But it will first be in 2 weeks I again will be availible at the office.

Kim,

I can't see a single time where you have assigned points for any of the answers people have provided you with.

This discourages people from helping you (Which could be why only one kind soul is responding to your problem).

Maybe you would like to review the help you received for each response, and award points according to the recommended guidlines.

Once you get a reputation for not awarding points, people might decide NOT to look at your messages in the future.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

After the Controller firmware update I get this error message, when I start up the PC:

"Drive parameter tracking predicts imminent failure"

But I am still able to boot - I am just installing Windows again .. So I hope It will works with my scsi setup I made on the controller

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
There could be two reasons for this error. One may be an errenous message which usually is false. Second could be that your hdd is about to fail. But there is M&P patch which takes care of this if it is a failse message. Here is the link to download this:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/10468.html

Please let me know how you make out.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

When I try with the patch, it comes with an error message, that the version on the diskette is not newer than the current one ..

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
That's alright it means you don not need to be worried about the firmware on the HDDs then. Just proceed with the setup and if you still get that error message then one of your hdds may be about to fail. But you have to wait for the ID because usually it tells you which one is about to fail.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Yes - It says is the SCSI 2 HD. But the error first came as I updated the firmware for the controller ....

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
What size the HDDs are?? In any case just try the softpaq from the following link and see if you're able to update the firmware since sometimes the message could be false as well. If you do manage to update the firmware and the message goes away then it's good otherwise replace the hdd. Here is the link. Just make the first disk even though it asks you for 10 disks. Once you cold boot your system with first disk then it will specify as to which other disk you need>

Hmm .. I am still unable to upgrade the firmware ... But the disk is still working .. but for how long ?

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
If the disk is functioning and you still get the imminent drive failure message then you should replace the drive before you loose any data. If it's a raid 5 environment then you can wait till it dies and then replace the drive and let it rebuild.

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Ok - i`ll wait and see - I am running with raid 5.

Everything is running perfect - So my last question is the tape station which is in the server.

It is a Compaq DLT 40/80 GB - What about drivers etc. for this ? - or should this already be installed by smart start cd

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
If you are using a third party backup software then that software should provide you with the drivers for example veritas-backupexec, arcserve etc have their own drivers for the tape drive. Just in case you are running OS native backup then you would need the following drivers:

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

I was just wondering how it is able to install Windows 2000 by smartstart.

It is only possible to choose Server or advanced server installation .. but I need to install a normal 2000 installation

?

Re: Problem with mouse / keyboard

Hello Kim,
If you are trying to install the 2000 professional on a server then you have to go through the Manual installation process and when the time comes to do the OS selection then choose 'Other'. Just remember that you would have to specify the SCSI drivers manually by hitting F6 key.
