Proliant 1600 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected

Here is what i have done so far ...

Re-seated everything, the cables, the drives, the "dotter boards" etc. etc.

the main fan that plugs into the "dotter board" the cpu is on had failed. the client removed this fan, and jerry-rigged a fan they purchased at the corner store. The computer still comes up with the 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected message.

I went onsite, and brought the computer back to the shop for further diagnosis, which is where i reseated everything under the sun.

All the fans work, but i didnt like this micky mouse getup they did with the corner-store fan. so i ordered the replacement part from compaq, and it arrived this morning.

I installed said fan, and it is still giving me this error.

there is no "actual" cpu fan, it is a PII550 Slot 1 with a bigass heatsink. there is no place on the board for a cpu fan to plug in, even if i wanted to. so i believe it has something to do with this 120mm fan that is mounted on this dotter board.

i cant get to the BIOS, as F9 and F10 generate keyboard errors. and right after the 1611: error it says "critical fan failure detected= shuting down computer - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1," then i restarts.

AHRHGHRGHRE!!! =)~

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Todd.

How wierd is this. I plug the fan, into cpu2 fan slot. and it works.

i have called CSN and they have no idea why this works, but tell me this is what happens once the fan has failed once. you must use fan plug 2 for cpu2 to make fan1 work.

bizzare.

Re: Proliant 1600 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected

Dear Todd,

I have the same problem here, I have a Compaq Proliant 1600. After problem with message 1611 CPU Fan failure, PC reboots.

I have changed the CPU-Fan and the powersupply also. But still I receive this message.

You say you put the connector of the fan in another plug... but I can't find more than one socket to plug in the fan... can you tell me where you put in the plug... this would be a great help!!!!

Thanks

Re: Proliant 1600 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected

Bonjour,

This morning I had a similar problem on a PL800 : 1611 I/O Fan Failure Detected.

After 1 minute on the server was rebooting.

In fact on a PL800 or PL1600, there is 3 fans: 1 on the power, 1 on the back of the PC and an other in the front(this one is very well hided; you have to open a side cover to get it: Alleluia it was dead so i take one of a PL1600 tu put on PL800)

And no more message , no more Reeboot
be lucky.

PS: look there too

Have you connected the fan cable to the right fan sensor pins on the motherboard? There are two on the proliant 1600 and the one closest to the fan is the WRONG ONE. Double-check your connections and compare with the drawing on the inside cover of the proliant case...you will see that it doesn't show any comment for the pins close to the fan but look at #7 on the motherboard identification snapshot (near the second processor slot) that is your baby...CPU Fan Failure Error 1611 will get you every time if you goof here...

Re: Proliant 1600 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected

i have the same problem, but in my case i don't know where to plug the CPU FAN.
where is the connector?

And... do i need a special fan ? cause i tried similari models from old proliant servers unused but the error remains......

Re: Proliant 1600 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected

Hi guys,

I had/still have the same problem with the Compaq Proliant 3000 Server. After some research I discovered the following:

There are three wires coming from the fan. One +12V, One -12V and one signal for checking the fan's state.

In modern fans/motherboards, the third wire sends back a sinus (a signal going up and down) telling the motherboard the fan is spinning (a so called tach signal). However, on the proliant motherboards the third wire is supposed to be either high (meaning the fan is blocked) or low (meaning the fan is spinning). This is called a rotor locked signal.

In short: For the proliant motherboards, you (and still me) are looking for a rotor locked fan. They are available on the internet but I am still a bit reserved on buying one since I'm not really sure it's going to work.

Re: Proliant 1600 1611: Cpu Fan failure detected

By the way. There is a very small change the server might boot. This is when all signals on the fans happen to be low at the point of measurement. Since I have three new fans, I calculated my change is between 0.3 and 12% the server boots.

And really, sometimes I'm lucky and the damn thing actually boots. After that, it's a matter of keeping it running without the need of a reboot.

The response posted by Denzil Garnes Dec 29, 2004 was SPOT on!

I too continued to experience the CPU fan Failure 1611 error even after we installed a replacement fan in one of our PL 1600s. Initially the engineer plugged the fan into the wrong sensor.

The fan MUST be plugged into the set of sensor pins further from the fan.
