Proliant DL380G7 with Intel RAID controller - failure

Hi Everyone,

I have a Proliant DL380 G7 with an Intel RAID controller (RS2BL080).

This is attached to 16x MDL 500GB HP disks (internal).

When a lot of data is being read or written to the disk, the controller gives me the following error message:

"Critcal Error. The controller 0 has encountered a fatal error and has been reset"

I realise this is more a question for Intel, but they are being less than helpful (to say the least) as they refuse to support the card because it's not in on of their servers, so I was hoping that someone here might have seen this before and can provide some guidance on how to fix this (if fix there is).

Thank you,

Stephane

Re: Proliant DL380G7 with Intel RAID controller - failure

Hmm... Google tells me the Intel RS2BL080 RAID controller is LSI MegaRAID-based true hardware RAID controller.

My first step would be to check if there are driver and/or firmware updates for the RAID controller... and yes, Intel's support pages seem to have plenty of driver and firmware versions available.

The requirement to reset the controller suggests there might be a firmware bug: ideally, the controller should be able to detect and report all disk-side errors without requiring a controller reset.

Another possibility is a communication issue between the driver and the hardware: this might be fixed with a driver update.

Hi Matti,

I already updated the driver and firmware though.

My next move is to try to downgrade the firmware.

Still astonished by Intel not supporting their own card unless it is installed in an Intel server!!!

Thank you,

Stephane
