Proliant ML370 G4 - Problem booting into Smartstart or Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi,

I'm having a problem booting an ML370 G4 into Smartstart 8.30 or Smartstart 8.40 (64 bit version).

The server POSTs ok and begin's loading Smartstart, it goes through the splash screen on the software, then the screen goes blank and nothing further happens (i've left it for over an hour to see if it eventually kicks in, but no).

I've tried recreating the CD, and using a USB stick, but get the same behaviour, i've also downloaded another copy of the each version but again same behaviour.

I've tried just building it direct with Server 2008 R2, but keep getting issues with it being unable to find the Kernel before it's even loaded setup.

As far as I can tell the server should be capable of running a 64 bit OS as the processor is compliant and HP's website indicates it should.

Has anyone seen anything similar at all?

Very late reply, sorry about that.

First off, Windows Server 2008 R2 isn't supported on the ML370 G4 - meaning that HP has decided against publishing drivers that will install under R2. The OS itself has no complaints whatsoever about my own ML370 G4, though.

It's been a while since I mixed up my x86 and x64 setup disks, but if I remember right, the systems should be telling you at the bootloader stage that the CPU is 32-bit only if you try an x64 disc in an x86 machine, and the G4s are all supposed to be x64 capable anyway. Have you tried 2008 x86, does that give the same result?

For weird errors or just crashes like this, I usually, at least with desktop machines, tend to blame it on the RAM, then the CPU, and finally on the mainboard (though historically it usually turns out to be the mainboard.)

Memory is easiest to check - remove half the RAM, see if you still have a problem. If you do, replace with the other half of the ram - if it still doesn't work, it's at least statistically unlikely that it's the fault of the RAM... (you can also test the ram sticks one by one, though the system won't be fun to use on one ram stick).

Do you have SAN drives presented to the server?

I have seen that course that kind of behaviour.

I had this too.. upgraded firmware to latest on ( at least array controller).. couldn't do in one go as wouldn't boot latest firmware disk :roll:

did to 7.7 first, then 9.10

Smartstart then runs.

... now having bother with....
