Question on SSD compatibilty of Microserver Gen10 Plus

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying a HPE Micorserver Gen10 Plus. I wouldn't use a HDD but go with SSDs. The only official supported HPE drive is an 240GB drive which is definitly to small.

Buying a seperate SSD and fitting it with the HPE conversion kit wouldn't be a problem, but I read some reports about non detected SSDs by the system. It's not really clear to me, whether this was caused by bad luck, an old Firmware of the server or SSD or if that is a systematic topic.

I would go with a Samsung PM881 or Seagate IronWolf Pro 125. Afaik the Samsung drive is also used by HPE for other servers but obviously if I buy the drives separatly, they won't have any HPE firmware on it.

So the big question is: Will the Microserver work with either the PM881 or the IronWolf Pro 125? Any way to find this out before ordering everything and sending it back if it won't work? Afaik there would defenitly be a message during POST about a not officially supported drive, but the message wouldn't hurt.

Thanks

Thank you for your reply. Do you have HPE Gen10 servers running with the IronWolf Pro 125 without major issues?

Re: Question on SSD compatibilty of Microserver Gen10 Plus

We have a customer that loves the micro server form factor but doesn't need high end SSD requirements. We checked the power usage and it's way below the stated maximim power. Still the drive is sometimes removed at preboot, making this an unstable configuration. The strangest thing is, the drive works properly in a "normal" desktop and laptop environment.

Once the SSD's are detected they run perfectly until a reboot. Can this unstablitiy not be fixed in a new firmware release?

Re: Question on SSD compatibilty of Microserver Gen10 Plus

SSD drives for the Microserver Gen10 is a pretty much hit or miss proposition.  Looking at other forums shows that it's pretty much a crapshoot full of "a friend's cousin's roomate's step brother uses XYZ drives and they work great!".  Hardly a well researched opinion.

The important thing is to make sure the drive doesn't exceed the 2.23W max during operation -- don't go by wattage at idle.  It will take some digging at each drive's manufacturer site to find operation wattage.  HP doesn't keep a list of approved drives other than their own 240GB SSD.  Needless to say, 240GB SSD individual drives are a no go for a lot of situations, so good luck finding one that will fit your needs.
