"Discovery Failed" HP Smart Update Manager

Hi all

I am trying to perform firmware update from the firmware CD 7.80 on a DL380 G4.

However I got a "Status: Discovery Failed"

Any idea how to resolve this?

Re: "Discovery Failed" HP Smart Update Manager

So I tried 7.7 on a CD.
Same error.

1. Put the CD in and double click on Autorun.
2. HP Firmware Maintenance and click Agree.
3. Click on "Firmware Update" and click on "Install Firmware"
4. "HP Smart Update Manager" -> Select Installation Target -> Local Host -> Click Next
5. "Step 2 of 3" "Check System for Installed Items"
6. hpsum_discmgr.exe crash
7. "Select items to be installed" "Status: Discovery Failed"

Re: "Discovery Failed" HP Smart Update Manager

you're doing it online?

Lai I think the best option when you install the Firmware CD is reboot the server and apply it

at the doing it online it's not the best option because you need to reboot the server

Re: "Discovery Failed" HP Smart Update Manager

Lai,
If you will zip up and attach the files in the %TEMP%\hp_sum directory, I can try to find out why the failure occurred.

Re: "Discovery Failed" HP Smart Update Manager

Hi,

according to HP Smart Update Manager user guide :

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00679482/c00679482.pdf?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Discovery failed means :

The host is not ready for installation. The detection of installed hardware, software, and firmware has failed.

Not sure but can be that you make big step of FW upgrade (from too old FW version to the newest)and if so, try making it in 2 steps.

Other issue can be that there are no drivers for a device , it is good when you install PSP 7.7 to ensure the drivers are updated.
If you can afford 15 minutes downtime(instead of 2) you can make the FW update offline.

Regards,
Pac
