RAID 5 not rebuilding

Hi,

I recently get an old Proliant 1600 with 2 CPU's a raid card (SmartArray 3200) and 7 disks (36 Gb)

I configured a RAID 5 on 6 disks and let the synchronisation finished. The last disk is for spare out of the server)

Today I tried to remove 1 disk and replace it by the last disk, but the RAID 5 doesn't rebuild.
The server rebooted and now, it ask for an OS.

If anyone can help, thanks.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

Hi,

do you have swapped the two drives?
or you extracted one and only replaced with the other?
numbering the HD from 1 to 7, which HDs have you used?

let me know

bye

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

I have a hard disk cage in my server, so that I can install 6 Disks. With the SmartArray card, and SCSI disks, I haven't to put an SCSI ID for the disks. It's automatic.

With the soft, I see them numbered from 0 to 5.

The 7th disk is on my desk, only in case of, but I have tried to see if the rebuild would work if I remove a disk, wait to see it default and the, install the new one.
Then, nothing happens (no rebuilding state, only 1 disk on error).

On other servers, when I do like that, when inserting the new disk, rebuild begins without any other action.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

Hi,
excuse me ... but ... may be there is another failed disk?

I mean: may be that the failed disk you are replacing is not the "real" failed HD?

bye.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

Regarding with the soft, only 1 disk is in a failed state.
The log asked to replace this disk by another one.

I precise that all disks are COMPAQ.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

ok.
don't hate me.

I suppose ... I suppose.
only this.
because I'm not there.

so, your drives are 0 to 5.
you see that the failed drive is HD 2.
if you are making a mistake (excuse me again!!!), and you are removing HD # 5 ???

the position is the same.
but you are (may be) counting from left instead than from right or from top instead than from bottom and viceversa.

let me know.
excuse me again for the stupid answer ... but ...

bye.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

I don't hate you, don't worry.

This could be an error, but using the soft, when you select the fault drive, a led is flashing on the drive.

So you could'nt do a mistake.

In fact, i'm sure I have removed the rifht drive, but my problem is that nothing happens when I put the new disk. Even in the logs, I can't see that a new disk is in place.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

it's very strange ...
without an HD (failed or not, rebuilt or not) raid 5 should boot.

if the other server is excatly the same, excuse me but I have to insist: two drives are failed ...

the other question I have in my head it's better I don't ask ... (ultra-stupid question).

let me know.

bye.

Re: RAID 5 not rebuilding

I'll try to re-create my raid 5 with only 3 disks and 1 spare, and I'll see what happens when removing 1 disk...
I'll verify my RAID and card configuration to be sure I have'nt forget something.

I'll let you know.

Thanks for your support.
