RAID-5 WRONG CALCULATION BY SERVER

Hi,

Im a new IT admin in my cimpany, and I have a server that already is configured with 8 SAS drives in RAID-5, but they have different sizes, let me tell you the server and storage details:

HP Proliant DL380 G5

Eight SAS drives:

3 * 72  GB

4 * 146 GB

1 * 300 GB

all drives are configured in a signle RAID-5, the total storage is 478 GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, is that correct?! ... how can i calculate this complicated collection?!, the server hosts ESX 4.1, is this config correct for it?

awaiting your kind responses

Re: RAID-5 WRONG CALCULATION BY SERVER

Looks good.

RAID 5 for 7 * 72 GB disks are round about the value you get.

The smallest disk in the RAID set the limit.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: RAID-5 WRONG CALCULATION BY SERVER

Torsten is right, a RAID-5 array of differently sized disks will only use the size of the smallest disk, on ALL of your disks. Raid-5 means you get only 7 disks worth of usable capacity, your 8th is dedicated for parity.
