RAID 6 OS issues on DL380
I have a friend that has the issues i am about to describe... A DL380 G5 with 8 HDDs and smart arry P410 was configured with ONLY RAID6 for all the 8 drives with 4 logical volumes. The OS is win2k3. One day, the users couldn't connect and when the sys admin got to the server room, he only saw on the screen.. "a disk read error occurred". He inserted the HP smartstart CD and saw that two of the drives have failed and required to be replaced. Because it was RAID6, he replaced the 2 drives and the rebuilding process started which took a long time like 16hrs hrs to complete. After the completion, the OS wasn't still coming up, so he decided if he could use the bootable OS to repair the OS on the server but the bootable OS CD wasn't booting. The only CD that boots on the server is the smartstart CD. He now decided to use the smartstart CD to install OS on the logical Volume1 since he is sure that is where the win2k3 OS was. After loading the smartstart CD and about to start the process of re-installing the OS, the C drive but got a message....." Ready to install" warning! Pressing "Next" will install the selected OS and will reset all drives to a freshly installed state. data currently on this server will be lost-- this is normal when installing OS." Now the question is this.... How can this OS be repaired or be re-installed without losing the data on the Drives apart from the volume that has OS which is the logical volume1 ( drive C)???
P.S. This thread has been moved from Servers>General to ProLiant Servers (ML,DL,SL). -HP Forum Moderator
